How to Configure Operations Manager 2007 to Manage SNMP-Enabled Devices and Computers Not Running Windows

Use the following procedure to discover Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)-enabled devices and computers running operating systems other than Windows and configure Operations Manager 2007 to manage them.

To discover SNMP-enabled devices and computers not running Windows and configure Operations Manager 2007 to manage them

  1. Log on to the computer with an account that is a member of the Operations Manager Administrators role for the Operations Manager 2007 Management Group.

  2. In the Operations Console, click the Administration button.

    Note

When you run the Operations Console on a computer that is not a Management Server, the Connect To Server dialog box displays. In the Server name text box, type the name of the Operations Manager 2007 Management Server that you want the Operations Console to connect to.

  3. At the bottom of the navigation pane, click Discovery Wizard.

  4. On the Introduction page, click Next. The Introduction page does not appear if the Computer and Device Management Wizard has been run before and Don't show this page again was selected.

  5. On the Auto or Advanced? page, do the following:

    1. Select Advanced discovery.

    2. In the Computer & Device Types list, select Network Devices.

    3. In the Management Server list, click the Management Server or gateway server to discover the objects.

      Note

For more information about gateway servers, see Gateway Server.

    4. Click Next.

  6. On the Discovery Method page, do the following:

    1. Type the Start and End of the IP address range that you want to scan. The maximum supported range of IP address is 50,000.

    2. Type the SNMP community of the objects that you want to manage. For more information about SNMP communities, see Security Considerations in Operations Manager 2007.

    3. Click Discover to display the Discovery Progress page.

      Note

Discovery will run for a maximum of 60 seconds and can return a maximum of 1000 network devices. A device that is already managed by the Management Group is not returned. The time it takes discovery to complete depends on many factors, such as the criteria specified and the configuration of the IT environment.

  7. On the Select Objects to Manage page, do the following:

    1. Select the objects that you want to manage.
    2. Click Change, and then click the computer you want to be the proxy agent for the selected objects. The proxy agent can be any agent-managed computer or Management Server in the Management Group. It must have SNMP installed, an optional Windows component, and be able to connect to the objects using the protocol.
    3. Click Next.
  8. On the Summary page, click Finish. The objects will display in the Network Devices node of the Operations Console Administration pane and are ready to be managed.
