Devices Profile for Web Services (DPWS) enables devices to use the flexibility of Web-based open standards for security-enhanced Web service messaging, discovery, description and eventing. DPWS describes a set of requirements that allows a device host to expose its available services and enables client applications to easily discover it on the subnet and manage it across the network. These DPWS mechanisms depend on a lightweight subset of the following communication standards and protocols:
- XML
- Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP)
- HTTP, and UDP for discovery
- TCP/IP IPv4 and IPv6
- HTTPD Web Server
- Simple Service Discovery Protocol (SSDP)
- Web Service Description Language (WSDL)
- MIME attachments using MTOM for in-band streaming
- WS-Discovery
- WS-MetadataTransfer
- WS-Addressing
- WS-Eventing
- TLS/SSL to enable authentication and to protect message data for secure channel communication
