How To: Activate a License Offline

There are some situations where offline activation is necessary. In remote or highly restricted areas, activation over the Internet is not possible. This may also be true in cases where high security restrictions require only physical access to the computer. In these situations, it is necessary for a representative with the license information on some form of media, such as a USB device, to perform the steps necessary to activate the software on the target computer. 

 

Where Internet access is available for e-mail, the activation process is completed by sending the required information between the software vendor and customer over e-mail. 

 

Prerequisites for Manual Activation 

The following files must be installed on your computer before attempting to manually activate a license. You must also have an SLP Services account.

  • A private Permutation.
  • SLP Code Protector.

The following sections walk you through step-by-step instructions for manual activation of a license. 

 

To Activate a License Manually – Software Vendor Part I 

  1. Log on to SLP Code Protector with your administrator credentials.
  2. Create a license:
    1. Identify the customer.
    2. Select a product.
    3. Select a feature set.
    4. Click Create. This creates a computer-bound perpetual license with no user limitations.
  3. Record the activation key for deployment to the customer.

 

To Protect Code in an Application – Software Vendor Part II

  1. Launch SLP Code Protector, and log on.
  2. Ensure that the attributes in the right pane of the Project tab are accurate for the application you want to protect. For example, the value of the Target Framework is in most cases, v2.0.50727.
  3. Click Add Module, and identify the methods you want to protect.
  4. Determine a location on the hard drive for the license bits.
  5. Click Protect. This marks the specified code for protection, and creates bits and an activation key for deployment.
  6. Ship the bits and activation key to the customer.

 

To Request an Activation Key for a Protected and Licensed Application – Customer Part I

  1. Launch the protected application. The Activation wizard opens and presents the following three options:
    • I want to activate the software over the Internet
    • I have a license file I want to install
    • I want to request a license file
  2. Select the third option: I want to request a license file.
  3. Click Next, and enter the activation key.
  4. Click Copy to clipboard to copy the license request information.
  5. Paste the contents from the clipboard in an e-mail or text file, and send it to the software vendor.
  6. Click Finish.

 

To Activate a License with the SLP Online Service - Software Vendor Part III

  1. Log on to the SLP Online Service.
  2. Click Manual Activation in the navigation panel.
  3. Paste the license request information you received from the customer into the Paste License Request box.
  4. Click Load. After the request is loaded, the license information will be displayed in the License to activate section. Leave the Locking option set to Machine.
  5. Click Activate.
  6. Click Download License File.
  7. Send the downloaded file, SLPActKey.bin, to the customer.

 

To Activate a Protected and Licensed Application – Customer Part II

  1. Copy the file you received from your software vendor, SLPActKey.bin, to a location on your hard drive.
  2. Launch the protected application. The Activation wizard opens and presents the following three options:
    • I want to activate the software over the Internet
    • I have a license file I want to install
    • I want to request a license file
  3. Click I have a license file I want to install.
  4. Browse to or type the location of the license file, and click Open.
  5. Click Next, and then click Finish. The activated application opens.
