How To: Issue a Limited Usage License

A limited usage license provides a specified number of times that a license or feature is accessed. You can set this restriction for a non-commercial or commercial license.

For a non-commercial license, it is a good practice to limit trial or evaluation licenses with an expiration date, due to the ease with which the license store can be removed or rolled back or how easy it is to gain unlimited usage, unless a date-based restriction is in effect. Therefore, it is recommended that you limit trials to some time period (even for a long period, such as six months).

For commercial licenses, limited usage-based features enables a customer to try optional features that can enhance the work environment, and then decide at leisure which optional features to purchase.

To Issue a Limited Usage License

  1. Log on to the SLP Online Service.
  2. Click New License in the License section of the navigation pane.
  3. Select Commercial or Non-Commercial.
  4. Fill in the customer field. The information added here must match an existing customer or alternatively, you can type Default.
  5. Select a product from the Product drop-down list (required). The screen refreshes to populate the product information from the database.
  6. Skip to Step 7 if you want to only limit the number of usages for the license. However, if you want to also limit usage of features, select a Feature Set in the SLP Online Service. This populates the Features in License table. From this table you can modify individual features and add usage values there, too. For example, you might want to limit a feature for a shorter number of uses than the license. To modify a usage limit for an individual feature while creating a new license:
    1. Select the feature for which you want to add a limited usage value in the Features in License table, and click Edit.
    2. Select Expiration Days and ensure that the value is set to Unlimited. This ensures that the license will not expire before the number of usages is reached.
    3. Set the value for the Total Usage Limit to the number of usages you want for the feature. This frees the customer from making a time-based decision about the product.
    4. Click Gather Execution Count to gather statistics about feature usage frequency. (Optional).
    5. Click OK to save the changes to the feature.
    6. Repeat the previous steps for each feature you wish to modify.
  7. Click the calendar icon next to the Start Date field to change the date. The Start Date is automatically populated with the current date.
  8. Select Expiration Days and ensure that the value is set to Unlimited. This ensures that the license will not expire before the number of usages is reached.
  9. Set the value for the Total Usage Limit to the number of usages you want for the product. This frees the customer from making a time-based decision about the product.
  10. Add values for the Concurrent Usage Limit and Grace Period (days) fields as desired.
  11. Click Renewable box if you want to enable the evaluation license for renewal.
  12. Click Gather Execution Count to gather statistics about application usage frequency.
  13. Leave the Locking option set to Machine. This provides greater security, because the license is associated with the machine.
  14. Add a description for the license, and leave the default settings.
  15. Click Issue License.
  16. Click Copy To Clipboard, and record the activation key for later use when activating the application or to send the activation key to the customer, depending on your activation process.
