The HealthMon management console is a component of Systems Management Server (SMS) that provides a central, graphical, real-time status view of Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 or higher and BackOffice servers. Based on color-coded severity levels, you can view operational conditions, including both normal and exception status. As events are received, HealthMon organizes and displays them according to predefined monitored object groups (MMC nodes).

About HealthMon Monitoring
The monitoring component of HealthMon bundles a set of predefined monitoring policies that identify the metrics and criteria for normal, abnormal (Warning and Critical), and Unknown conditions. These policies control how HealthMon identifies and presents normal and abnormal operating conditions. As a result, you do not need to determine what to monitor or what might constitute an exception.
As events are received, HealthMon organizes and displays them according to predefined monitored object groups (MMC nodes). These object groups comprise system-level resources (processor, memory, paging file, physical disk, network interface, server work queues, security, and fault server) and BackOffice servers (SNA Server, SQL Server, Exchange Server, and IIS Server). The use of resource- and server-monitored object groups can help you more easily interpret the impact of each event condition. In addition, you can view the individual status of all monitored systems and the occurrence of all events.

HealthMon monitors each system that you configure for the components that you specify. You can either use the default thresholds or configure the thresholds specific to your environment. Then, HealthMon will alert you to network and system problem areas so that you can resolve them.
Note To enable the physical and logical disk counters, type diskperf at a command prompt and follow the instructions. You can use this command to report whether or not the disk performance counters have been enabled on the local or a remote computer.
The following table lists the components that HealthMon monitors and their counters.

The HealthMon management console is a component of Systems Management Server (SMS) that provides a graphical, and real-time status view of Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 or greater and BackOffice servers. You can view operational conditions based on color-coded severity levels. As events are received, HealthMon organizes and displays them according to predefined monitored object groups (MMC nodes).
The HealthMon console tree displays a hierarchical listing of HealthMon functions. You can view the status of each monitored system, component, and all events.
Navigating the HealthMon Console
You navigate the HealthMon console tree by moving from item to item, expanding and collapsing branches as needed to expose the item that contains the information you want to see. To expand and collapse items in the HealthMon console tree, click the PLUS SIGN (+) or MINUS SIGN (-) (if they exist) adjacent to each item.
When you use the HealthMon console, you follow this general pattern:
Determine the task you want to perform.
Find the appropriate item in the console tree.
Expand the console tree to expose additional child items until you find the item you need to use.
Alter the item's configuration by changing its properties.
For more information, see Navigating the HealthMon Console and Viewing HealthMon Information.
Elements of the HealthMon Console
The HealthMon console tree includes three major elements:
Monitored Systems
Monitored Components
All Events
The following table lists specific administrative tasks and describes how you can accomplish these tasks by using each of the three major HealthMon console items.
