Description

Enables desktop screen savers.

This entry stores the setting of the Activate Screen Saver Group Policy. Group Policy adds this entry to the registry with a value of 0 when you enable the policy. If you disable the policy, Group Policy sets the value to 1. If you set the policy to Not configured, Group Policy deletes the entry from the registry, and the system behaves as though the value is 1.

Value

Meaning

0

The policy is disabled. Screen savers do not run. Also, the Screen Saver section of the Screen Saver tab is disabled, so users cannot change the screen saver options.

1 (or not in the registry)

The policy is enabled or not configured. Screen savers can run. Also, the Screen Saver section of the Screen Saver tab is enabled, so users can change screen saver options.

Change method

To change the value of this entry, use Group Policy. This entry corresponds to the No screen saver Group Policy (User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\Display).

Note Image Note

The Activate Screen Saver policy takes precedence over the Screen saver executable name Group Policy (which corresponds to the SCRNSAVE.EXE entry). If both policies are enabled, the Screen saver executable name policy must specify a valid screensaver.

This entry takes precedence over a user setting. If this entry appears in the registry, a policy is in effect, and the system ignores the value of the ScreenSaveActive entry in the HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop subkey.

Tip Image Tip

To specify a screen saver on a computer without setting a policy, use Control Panel. Double-click Display, and then click the Screen Saver tab.
