Partitioning Keys

The PartitioningKey column is used by auto-partitioning to automatically create new partitions within the OLAP database on an as-needed basis. The PartitioningKey column must be one that can be converted to an 8-byte integer and back to its base type. The PartitioningKeySource can be the fact table, or another table that contains a superset of key values contained in the fact table, for example, a table containing import batch IDs. Note that while the PartitioningKeySource need not be the cube fact table, a column with the same name and data type of the PartitioningKey must be present within the fact table.
