Install Exchange 2010 Hybrid Server for an Exchange 2003 Hybrid Deployment

The Exchange 2010 hybrid server enables communication between your existing Exchange 2003 servers and the cloud-based service. The hybrid server consists of the Client Access, Hub Transport, and Mailbox server roles. You'll need to do a few things to install a hybrid server, so let's get started.

How do I install Exchange 2010?
You need to be assigned permissions before you can perform this procedure. Here are the permissions you need:
If you haven't previously prepared the Active Directory schema for Exchange 2010, the account you use must be a member of the Schema Admins groups.
If this is the first Exchange 2010 server in this organization, you must be a member of the Enterprise Admins group.
If you've already prepared the Active Directory schema for Exchange 2010 and this isn't the first Exchange 2010 server in the organization, you must be a member of the Delegated Setup or Organization Management role groups.
We recommend installing the latest update rollup for Exchange 2010 on all your servers. Although you can install update rollups on a server after Exchange 2010 has been installed, it's less time-consuming to incorporate the update rollup into the install server installation process. To do this, copy the contents of the Exchange 2010 DVD to the file system, and then copy or move the downloaded update rollup file to the Updates folder in the installation tree. When you perform the procedure below, the update rollup will be installed as part of the initial installation process.
Microsoft releases update rollup packages approximately every six to eight weeks. The rollup packages are available via Microsoft Update and the Microsoft Download Center. In the Search box on the Microsoft Download Center, type "Exchange 2010 update rollup" to find links to the rollup packages.

You'll use the Exchange Server 2010 Setup wizard to install the hybrid server.
Important
You need to provide an Exchange 2010 Hybrid Edition product key on the hybrid server when you configure a hybrid deployment with Office 365. To obtain a Hybrid Edition product key, contact Office 365 support.
Download Exchange 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1).
On the hybrid server, run Exchange2010-SP1-x64.exe to extract the installation files.
Navigate to the extraction location and double-click Setup.exe.
The Exchange Server 2010 Setup welcome screen appears. In the Install section, the software listed for Steps 1 and 2 was installed with the Exchange 2010 prerequisites. However, if these prerequisites aren't already installed, click the appropriate step to install them.
When Steps 1 and 2 are listed as Installed, click Step 3 to expand the Exchange language options, and then choose the appropriate option:
Install all languages from the language bundle This option installs all the Exchange 2010 languages from an Exchange 2010 language bundle. You can connect to the Internet to download the latest applicable language bundle or to use a previously downloaded language bundle on a local drive or network share. Internet connectivity is required for Exchange Setup to download the language pack bundle.
Install only languages from the DVD This option installs only the languages included with the Setup DVD. The installation of additional languages support requires installing the languages from the language bundle.
After Step 3 is complete, click Step 4: Install Microsoft Exchange.
On the Introduction page, click Next.
On the License Agreement page, review the software license terms. If you agree to the terms, select I accept the terms in the license agreement, and click Next.
On the Error Reporting page, select Yes or No to enable the Exchange Error Reporting feature, and click Next.
On the Installation Type page, select Typical Exchange Server Installation. This will install the Hub Transport, Client Access, and Mailbox server roles plus the Exchange Management Tools. To optionally change the installation path for Exchange 2010, click Browse, locate the appropriate folder in the folder tree, and then click OK. Click Next.
Use the Configure Client Access Server external domain page to configure an external fully qualified domain name (FQDN). This is the FQDN that you give to Outlook Web App users to connect to the Exchange 2010 hybrid server. Select the check box, enter your FQDN, and then click Next.
On the Mail Flow Settings page, select an Exchange 2003 server in the routing group which Exchange 2010 will connect to. Click Browse to select an Exchange 2003 server, and then click OK. Click Next.
On the Customer Experience Improvement Program page, optionally join in the Exchange Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP). The CEIP collects anonymous information about how you use Exchange 2010 and any problems that you encounter. To join the CEIP, select Join the Customer Experience Improvement Program, choose the industry that best represents your organization, and then click Next.
On the Readiness Checks page, review the Summary to determine if the system and server are ready for the hybrid server to be installed. If all prerequisite checks completed successfully, click Install. If any of the prerequisite checks failed, you must resolve the displayed error before you can proceed with installing the hybrid server. In many cases, you don't need to exit Setup while you're fixing issues. After you resolve an error, click Retry to run the prerequisite check again. Also, be sure to review any warnings that are reported.
The Progress page displays the progress and elapsed time for each phase of the installation. As each phase ends, it's marked completed and the next phase proceeds. If any errors are encountered, the phase will end as incomplete and unsuccessful. If that happens, you must exit Setup, resolve any errors, and then restart Setup.
When all phases have finished, the Completion page displays. Review the results, and verify that each phase completed successfully. Clear the check box for Finalize this installation using the Exchange Management Console, and then click Finish to exit Setup.
When you're returned to the Setup welcome screen, click Close. On the Confirm Exit prompt, click Yes.
Restart the computer to complete the installation of the hybrid server.
How do I enter the Hybrid Edition product key?
You need to be assigned permissions before you can perform this procedure. To see what permissions you need, see the "Product key" entry in the Exchange and Shell Infrastructure Permissions topic.
After you've obtained the product key from Office 365 support, follow these steps:
Open the Exchange Management Console on the hybrid server.
In the console tree, navigate to Server Configuration and select the hybrid server.
In the action pane, click Enter Product Key Group.
On the Enter Product Key page, enter the Hybrid Edition product key, and then click Enter.
On the Completion page, review the following, and then click Finish to close the wizard:
A status of Completed indicates that the wizard completed the task successfully.
A status of Failed indicates that the task wasn't completed. If the task fails, review the summary for an explanation, and then click Back to make any configuration changes.
How do I create a routing group connector?
If Exchange setup doesn't create routing group connectors between the hybrid server and an Exchange 2003 server for you, you must create them to allow mail to flow between your Exchange 2003 servers and your hybrid server. Do the following in the Exchange Management Shell to verify if routing group connectors were created, and if not, go ahead and create them.
Retrieve a list of all routing group connectors:
Get-RoutingGroupConnectorIf no routing group connectors are returned that contain the "Exchange Routing Group (DWBGZMFD01QNBJR)" routing group, create them using the following command:
New-RoutingGroupConnector -Name "2003-2010 RGC" -SourceTransportServers Ex2010.corp.contoso.com -TargetTransportServers Ex2003.corp.contoso.com -BiDirectional $True -PublicFolderReferralsEnabled $True
How do I know this worked?
The successful completion of the Exchange Setup wizard will be your first indication that the installation process worked as expected. To further verify that the hybrid server installed successfully, you can use the Shell to run the following command.
Get-ExchangeServer <server name>
This cmdlet outputs a list of the Exchange 2010 server roles that are installed on the hybrid server.
You can also check the Exchange setup log (ExchangeSetup.log), located in <system drive>\ExchangeSetupLogs to verify that the hybrid server was installed as expected.
