Connect UM to Your Telephone System with UM IP Gateways

Applies to: Office 365 for enterprises

A UM IP gateway links Unified Messaging to the physical IP gateway device or session border controller (SBC) so it can handle calls from your physical telephone system. UM IP gateways create a connection between Unified Messaging and your telephone system, and are required for Telex and E.164 dial plans. You don't need a UM IP gateway on UM systems with SIP URI dial plans.

When you create a UM IP gateway, you're telling UM where to accept incoming calls and where to send outgoing calls, and you're telling your telephone system where to send unanswered calls, so the two can communicate with each other. You can also specify the UM dial plan that the gateway is associated with, so the gateway is already connected to the dial plan when you create the gateway.

What do I need to do before I create a UM IP gateway?

First, you need to prepare a few things and gather information about how your physical telephone system will connect to UM. Your UM IP gateway setup depends on the type of telephone system you have and how you have set up the gateway to communicate through the cloud to your UM service. So, before you create a UM IP gateway, do the following:

  • Create a dial plan that matches the requirements of your telephone system. Then, when you create the gateway for the dial plan, you can select the dial plan that the gateway is for, and UM automatically creates a hunt group that connects the dial plan with the gateway. Here's how: Create a New UM Dial Plan.
    • Configure your physical telephone system to communicate with UM.
  • Write down the FQDN of the IP PBX or SBC that's going to route your telephone calls to UM.

How do I create and connect a UM IP gateway?

  1. Create a New UM IP Gateway   Use the UM dial plan you created and the FQDN of your PBX or SBC to create a UM IP gateway that connects UM to your physical telephone system.
  2. Configure a UM IP Gateway   Configure your gateway to control the message waiting indicator or outgoing calls settings. You must allow outgoing calls to enable Find Me and Play on Phone.
  3. Forward Calls from Your Physical Telephone Device to UM   Use the forwarding address provided on the Details page for the gateway to set up your telephone system to forward calls to UM.
