Install the Gateway and Agents from the Setup Wizard

Use the following procedure to install the System Center Advisor on-premise software using the Setup wizard. You use the same Setup wizard to install both the gateway and the agent. Run the wizard on each server in your Advisor deployment, selecting only those parts of the on-premise software that you want to install (for example, a gateway on one server, an agent on another).

You can also install the on-premise software from the command line. For information, see Install the Gateway and Agent from the Command Line.

If you have problems with installation, you can use the built-in logging functionality of the Windows Installer to obtain more information.

To install the gateway and optionally an agent

  1. In the directory where you downloaded the on-premise software, as described in Create an Account and Download the On-Premise Software, double-click AdvisorSetup.exe.

  2. Click Next on the Welcome page of the Setup wizard.

  3. Accept the license agreement, and then click Next.

  4. Enter the location where you want to install the on-premise software. By default, this location is %ProgramFiles%/System Center Advisor. Click Next.

  5. Select Gateway to install the gateway on this computer. You can also select Agent to install both the gateway and the agent. Click Next.

  6. A message is displayed about opening port 80 for communication with the agent. If you click Yes, the port is opened by the Setup program. If you click No, you are returned to the previous step. You cannot install the gateway without opening this port.

  7. If you are installing an agent on this computer and you have not previously installed the System Center Operations Manager 2007 R2 agent, you will see a page informing you that the Operations Manager agent, which is a prerequisite for Advisor, will be installed. Click Next to install the Operations Manager agent.

  8. Review the installation settings, and then click Install.

  9. Click Finish to close the Setup wizard.

The System Center Advisor Configuration Tool opens.

  10. On the Gateway Settings page, browse to the location where you downloaded the security certificate. Select the security certificate (RegistrationCert.pfx), and then click OK.

  11. If you are going to use a proxy server to connect to the service, select this option, and then type the address and port number for the proxy server.

  12. To restrict access to the gateway, select Restrict connections to this gateway to a specific set of agents. If you select this option, you must add your agents’ computer accounts to the Allowed Advisor Agents local group on the gateway. See Authorize Agents to Access the Gateway for information on how to do this.

Restricting access to the gateway is useful if you have multiple Advisor gateways deployed within your data center and want to ensure that only a specific group of servers should connect to a specific gateway. For example, you might have an Advisor gateway that you want to restrict to only servers belonging to the accounting department.

  13. On the Microsoft Update page, indicate whether you want to use Microsoft Update on this server to ensure your Advisor software is always up to date. Click Next.

    Note

You will only see this option if you have not previously opted into Microsoft Update when installing other Microsoft products.

  14. Review the configuration settings, and then click Apply.

  15. The configuration status is updated as the settings are applied. When the status shows complete, you can close the configuration tool.

Notice that there is an option right above the Close button to check with Microsoft Update for any updates to the on-premise software. If you leave this option selected, Microsoft Update opens after you click Close.

  8. Click Finish to close the Setup wizard.

The System Center Advisor Configuration Tool opens.
