Creating a Location Data Source File with Excel or Access

IMPORTANT: MapPoint Web Service was retired on November 18, 2011. Please see https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd877180.aspx for a list of current Bing Maps APIs.

You can create a data source file by exporting data from a Microsoft Office Access database or from a Microsoft Office Excel spreadsheet.

To export data from Microsoft Access to an XML file

  1. Open your data file in Microsoft Access, and on the File menu, click Export.

  2. In the Save as type list, select XML, and then click Export.

  3. In Export XML, ensure that Data (XML) and Schema of the data are selected, and then click Advanced or More Options, depending on which version of Microsoft Access you are using.

  4. On the Schema tab, under Export Location, select Embed schema in exported XML data document, and then click OK.

Note

When you export data from Microsoft Access to an XML file, the field properties are modified. Do not modify the data directly in the XML file.

To export data from Excel to a delimited text file

Note

If the last field in any row of your data source file is empty, do not use Microsoft Excel to create a delimited text file. Microsoft Excel will not export the empty field, and a missing field will cause upload jobs to fail.

  1. Open your data file in Microsoft Excel, and on the File menu, click Save as.

  2. In the Save as type list, select Text (Tab delimited) or CSV (comma delimited), and then click Save.

  3. Check the last column to ensure that all fields contain values.
