Reviewing and Correcting Geocoded Results

IMPORTANT: MapPoint Web Service was retired on November 18, 2011. Please see https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd877180.aspx for a list of current Bing Maps APIs.

Location data source files that do not contain latitude and longitude coordinates for all the locations are geocoded as part of the upload process. After the upload job is complete, the Job Details page for the job provides information about geocoded results in three tables:

  • Batch Geocoding Settings lists the setting for the maximum acceptable geocoding level and whether the flag for rejecting ambiguous geocodes is set to true or false.

  • Batch Geocoding Results displays the number of entities geocoded, the number of entities skipped, and the results by match code (good, imprecise, ambiguous, and so on).

  • Batch Geocoding - Results by Matched Method lists the results, sorted by matched method (address matches, street matches, postal code matches, and so on), with the number of times each type of match occurred.

The Job Details window remains open until you close it, so you can keep it open while editing the data source.

You may want to review and correct entities with the following match code results:

  • Ambiguous or 3 —The geocoder returned more than one possible match.

  • Imprecise or 2 —The geocoder was unable to match the address to the level provided and returned a less precise match instead.

  • Bad or 1 —The geocoder was unable to return a result.

You may want to review and correct entities with the following matched method results:

  • Post Code or 2 —The geocoder matched the postal code and returned latitude and longitude coordinates for the postal code centroid.

  • City or 3—The geocoder matched the city name and returned latitude and longitude coordinates for the city centroid.

  • Subdivision or 4—The geocoder matched only the state, province, or other subdivision.

The Bing Maps Customer Services site (CSS) provides two ways to access entities that were not geocoded satisfactorily.

To access a list of entities with a match code of Bad

  1. On the Home page, click the name of the data source.

  2. On the Data Source Properties page, click View entities that failed to geocode properly. This link opens the Manage Locations page with a list of entities that have a geocoding result with a match code of Bad.

To filter the list of entities yourself

  1. On the Home page or the Data Source Properties page, click the edit icon for the data source.

  2. In the Filter by drop-down list, select Geocode result.

  3. Use the filter settings to find the entities you want to review. For example, to find ambiguous results and correct them, select Ambiguous from the A Match Code of drop-down list and All from the A Matched Method of drop-down list. For more information about setting filters, see Managing Location Data.

  4. After you generate a list of entities that you want to review, you can work through the list and correct the geocode for each entity manually.

To generate a new geocode for an entity

  1. Click the entity ID of the entity you want to edit.

  2. Generate a new geocode for the new entity in one of the following ways:

    • If the address is incorrect, type corrections to the address fields, and then click Geocode to see if a better result is returned.

    • If the pushpin on the map is in an incorrect location, zoom and pan until you can see the proper location. Click the correct spot to adjust the location of the entity (a red pushpin with the label Adjusted appears).

    • If you want to modify the latitude and longitude manually, type new coordinates in the Latitude and Longitude fields below the map, and then click Refresh Map.

  3. Click Save Changes to save the changes to the entity, or click Cancel to return to the entity list without saving your changes.
