Monitor the System Center Advisor Gateway

System Center Advisor uses the System Center Health Service as the agent that collects and analyzes data. Because of this, it is easy to use System Center Operations Manager to monitor your Advisor agent to ensure is running and performing as expected. You can also use Operations Manager to monitor the Advisor gateway.

To do this, first, create an Operations Manager group for the gateways you want to monitor, and then use the Windows Service management pack template to create a monitor for the gateway service.

To create a group for the gateways

  1. Use the steps in How to Create Groups in Operations Manager 2007 (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=101188) to create a group named, “Advisor Gateways.” When you are given the option to save the group to a management pack, create a new management pack.

When you specify the members for the group, add the Windows Computer object for each computer where you have installed an Advisor gateway.

To monitor the Advisor gateway

  1. In the System Center Operations Manager Operations console, open the Authoring workspace.

  2. In the navigation pane, right-click Management Pack Templates, and then click Add Monitor.

  3. On the Select Monitoring Type page, select Windows Service, and then click Next.

  4. On the General Properties page, type a name and description for this new monitor. For example, “Monitor Advisor Gateway.”

  5. Select the management pack that you created when you created your group.

  6. Click Next.

  7. In the Service Name field, enter the name of the gateway service: System Center Advisor Gateway.

You can also browse to one of the computers where the gateway is installed, and then select the service.

  8. Under Target Group, specify the group you created, “Advisor Gateways.”

  9. Click Next.

  10. When given the option to select a performance counter, click Next without selecting a counter. This indicates that the monitor will monitor whether the service is running or not, instead of monitoring the performance of the service.

  11. Review the summary of the monitor, and then click Create.

An alert will be automatically generated when the gateway service is not running.
