About Visual Studio 11 Ultimate Developer Preview

Visual Studio 11 Ultimate Developer Preview integrates the Windows Developer Preview version of the Windows Driver Kit (WDK) to provide a new environment for developing, deploying, testing and debugging drivers. The WDK with Visual Studio helps make developers more productive by enabling them to simplify the creation of more reliable, better performing drivers.

Before you begin to install the WDK on Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, or Windows Developer Preview release of Windows 8, you must first install Visual Studio 11 Ultimate Developer Preview. When installing Visual Studio 11 Ultimate Developer Preview, if you choose the default path, Visual Studio will need to be launched with elevated privileges to write to the default directory. To avoid this, choose an installation location where you have write access.

To install the WDK:

  1. Run wdksetup.exe.
  2. In the Specify Location screen, provide an Install Path or accept the default by clicking Next.
  3. In the Join the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) screen, select Yes or No and then click Next.
  4. On the License Agreement screen, select Accept to install the WDK.

If you are building device drivers that rely on the Windows Driver Framework (WDF), you will need to install the WDFCOINSTALLER.MSI. These bits provide the co-installers for WDF and are used by many of the WDK samples.
