Add hyperlinks
You can add hyperlinks to Pushpin balloons or data sets in any of the following ways:
To manually add hyperlinks to balloon notes
Select a Pushpin or data point on the map.
On the View menu, click Show Information.
In the note section of the balloon, type the hyperlink.
Note You can add multiple hyperlinks to a single balloon, but only the first one will be associated with the Pushpin or data point.
To import or link to hyperlinks from your source data
Make sure that the data in your source file is properly formatted.
Choose whether to import or link to your data.
On the Data menu, click Import Data Wizard or Link Data Wizard, and then follow the wizard instructions.
Note Make sure that you import or link to the column that has hyperlink information.
If you selected any map type other than a Pushpin map, take the following steps:
- After your data is mapped, select the Pushpin or data set name in the map legend.
- On the Data menu, click Data Set Properties.
- Click the Balloon tab, and then click the name of the field or column that contains the hyperlinks.
- Click OK.

To have Microsoft MapPoint automatically create hyperlinks
Use this option if you are creating hyperlinks to a series of Web sites that all have the same hyperlink address structure. Having MapPoint generate hyperlinks is the only way to add hyperlinks to data sets that don't have balloons, such as Shaded Area maps, demographic data maps, data that is aggregated, or territories.
Select the Pushpin or data set name in the map legend.
On the Data menu, click Data Set Properties.
Click the Hyperlink tab, and then click Have MapPoint automatically create a set of hyperlinks.
Enter a hyperlink template, using an asterisk (*) as a placeholder for the actual place name associated with each data point.
For example, if the data is mapped by city as the geographic unit and you enter https://www.msn.com/*.htm (where * indicates the city name), MapPoint will create the following hyperlink for data mapped in Boston: https://www.msn.com/Boston%20MA.htm for every city in the Pushpin or data set.
Verify that the hyperlink is correct by looking at the hyperlink that appears in the Sample hyperlink box, and modify the hyperlink template, if necessary.
The sample hyperlink is based on the mapped data.
Click OK.
Tip You can also indicate display text, a bookmark, and ScreenTip for automatically generated hyperlinks using the following format:
DisplayName#Hyperlink#Bookmark#ScreenTip#
For example, if you enter Click Here#https://www.microsoft.com/##Link to Microsoft's Web site#, the text that appears in the Pushpin balloon is Click Here, the hyperlink address is https://www.microsoft.com/, and the ScreenTip on a saved Web page for the Pushpin or data point is Link to Microsoft's Web site.
Notes
The double number sign (##) in the string in this example indicates that no bookmark is set.
ScreenTips appear only when the map is saved as a Web page, not from the map file in MapPoint.
Notes
You can have multiple hyperlinks in a balloon or for a data point, but only one can be associated with a Pushpin or data point. MapPoint opens this associated hyperlink when no balloon is displayed or if there is no balloon for the data point.
To follow a hyperlink from the map without opening the balloon or if there is no balloon for the data point, press CTRL while clicking the Pushpin symbol or data point. This is a good way to check hyperlinks before saving a map as a Web page.
