By using the GPS sensor, you can get current information from the GPS receiver, such as latitude and longitude coordinates, bearing, and speed. The GPS Sensor dialog box appears on the map when:

  • A task pane other than the GPS pane is open.

  • You are using a GPS device.

    and

  • The Show GPS Sensor when GPS pane is closed check box is selected in the Options dialog box.

Information displayed on the GPS sensor

When the GPS Sensor dialog box is displayed:

  • Latitude

  • Longitude

  • Altitude

  • Time of fix (the time the reading is taken)

  • Status (when currently receiving data)

  • Num Sats (the number of satellite links)

  • Bearing (the current direction or heading)

  • Speed

Options on the GPS sensor

When the GPS Sensor dialog box is displayed, you have the option to:

  • Display the GPS sensor automatically when the GPS pane is closed. Select the Show GPS Sensor when GPS pane is closed check box.

  • Close the GPS sensor and show the GPS pane. Click Show GPS pane.

Note   Some GPS receivers can be configured to transmit only a portion of the information that is available. Data is transmitted from the GPS device to your computer or mobile device in the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) 0183 output format, which is called an NMEA sentence. In general, a particular NMEA sentence equates to a particular parameter, such as altitude. Check your GPS receiver to see whether any NMEA sentences are turned off.
