Installation Requirements

To install FIM CM, you must meet specific hardware and software requirements. The following table shows the minimum hardware requirements for a FIM CM server, which is the computer that will run the FIM CM Portal and FIM CM Update Service.

The FIM CM infrastructure involves more than just a FIM CM Portal and a FIM CM Update Service. The infrastructure also requires an Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) installation, an Enterprise Certification Authority, and a SQL Server database. The following table describes the software requirements for FIM CM infrastructure.

A single FIM CM server can manage multiple CAs, or you can use multiple FIM CM servers to manage one CA. |

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 |
FIM CM is a Microsoft .NET-connected application. You must install .NET Framework 3.5 on the server. If FIM CM is installed on the same server as SQL Server 2008, the .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is required. |

Because FIM CM requires Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) for administrative traffic and certificates, at least Internet Explorer 6.x is required. |

Security NoteImportant
To deploy smart cards or enable online certificate updates, FIM CM requires the Microsoft® Forefront Identity Manager Certificate Management (FIM CM) client software, which it accesses through Internet Explorer. However, FIM CM does not require client-side software for you to manage software-based certificates.
