FIM 2010 R2 Reporting Disaster Recovery

FIM 2010 R2 Reporting Disaster Recovery

There are five databases that may need to be recovered with regard to FIM 2010 R2 Reporting. They are:

Database Name Database SQL Server Name

The FIM Service Database

FIMService

The SCSM Management Server Database

ServiceManager

The Data Warehouse Databases

  • DWDataMart

  • DWRepository

  • DWStagingAndConfig

Disaster Recovery 1

Depending on the database that has failed, the recovery steps will vary. This section will provide information and steps to follow in the event of a database failure. The following three disaster recovery scenarios are outlined in this step. For additional information see System Center Service Manager 2010 SP1 Disaster Recovery Guide.

  • FIM Service Database Disaster Recovery

  • SCSM Management Server Database and Data Warehouse Databases Disaster Recovery

FIM Service Database Disaster Recovery

In this scenario, the FIM Service database has gone down and needs to be recovered. At this point, the FIM Service database has been restored from a backup to a prior point in time. The Data Warehouse database may have items in it that the FIM Service is un-aware of. Under these conditions use the following steps to synchronize the FIM Service database and the Data Warehouse database.

Disaster Recovery 2

To Restore the FIM Service Database

  1. Restore the FIM Service database from backup.

  2. Run Start-FIMReportingIncrementalSync. Does it complete or are there watermark errors? If there are watermark errors, proceed to the next step, otherwise you are finished.

  3. Run Start-FIMReportingInitialSync. Does this complete or are there errors? If there are errors, contact customer support. See How and when to contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support.

SCSM Management Server Database and Data Warehouse Databases Disaster Recovery

In this scenario, either the SCSM Management Server database or any of the Data Warehouse Databases have gone down and needs to be recovered. If either of these instances occurs it is recommended that both the SCSM Management Server Database and the Data Warehouse Databases be restored from backups that were taken at the same point in time. The reason behind this is that grooming jobs occur on the SCSM Management Server and if these are out of synch with the Data Warehouse databases, then reliability of these databases cannot be ensured. The database backups must be no more than an hour apart. Failure to restore all of the databases is an unsupported configuration. Under these conditions use the following steps to synchronize the FIM Service database and the Data Warehouse database.

To Restore the SCSM Management Server Database and Data Warehouse Databases Disaster Recovery

  1. Restore the SCSM Management Server database and the Data Warehouse databases from backup. This will be based on the recovery steps outlined in the System Center Service Manager 2010 SP1 Disaster Recovery Guide.

Best Practices for backing up the SCSM Management Server and Data Warehouse Server Databases

It is highly recommended that you follow the procedures outlined in the System Center Service Manager 2010 SP1 Disaster Recovery Guide. These procedures describe backing up the databases and the encryption key that is created when System Center is deployed. It also provides useful SQL scripts for capturing and preserving SQL Server logon and object level permissions information.
