How to: Copy a Work Item
When you copy a work item, you have several choices, depending on what you want to do with the work item, where the work item comes from, and where you plan to use it.
Required Permissions
To perform these procedures, you must be a member of the Contributors group or have the View work items in this node, and Edit work items in this node permissions set to Allow. For more information, see Team Foundation Server Permissions.
To copy a work item
Open a work item, or run an existing work item query.
Select a work item in the Query Results list and then, from the Edit menu, select Create Copy of Work Item.
—or—
Right-click a work item in the Query Results list and then select Create Copy of Work Item.
In the Copy Work Item dialog box, from the Team project list, select the team project that you want to copy the work items to.
In the Work item type box, select the type of work item to copy the information to.
Warning
If you select a work item type that does not have the same fields as the work item being copied, only the fields that are in both work item types will be copied.
Note
If the new work item is copied to the same team project, the new work item is saved in the same path as the old one. If the new work item is saved to a new team project, it is saved at the top-level node for the team project.
Click OK.
If the work item you copied does not support some of the field values copied over, you receive a message telling you the fields are unsupported. Correct the values and save the form.
Note
The work item state, if available for the work item type you are copying, is not copied. The new work item will always open in the default state with the default reason. For example, if the work item that you copied is Closed, the copy is still created as Active.
