A band defines instruments and other settings on PChannels. When a band change is made in a segment, instruments are assigned to PChannels, and other properties, such as volume, pan, and transposition, are set on each PChannel in the band. These properties apply even if the PChannel is being used to play waves rather than instrument sounds.

A band is not the same as a DLS instrument collection. A DLS collection contains data about the timbre of instruments but does not include any information about the role those instruments might play in a performance. Instrument data in the DLS collection is linked to particular PChannels in a performance by a band. When a part in a segment is assigned to a particular PChannel, it plays with the instrument, volume, and pan settings applied to that PChannel by the band.
