Microsoft Synthesizer

Windows Media Encoder SDK banner art

The Microsoft Synthesizer is a software synthesizer that is installed with the Microsoft DirectX run-time components. The Microsoft Synthesizer eliminates the need for MIDI hardware other than a simple sound card, and provides Downloadable Sounds Level 2 functionality for all applications using DirectX to play DirectMusic Producer content. For an overview, see Synthesis and Downloadable Sounds.

One advantage of using the Microsoft Synthesizer is that it provides consistent playback on all systems, regardless of the brand or model of the sound card. Microsoft Synthesizer is included in the DirectX system components, which are part of the Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 2000, and later operating systems.
