Using the Keyboard and Mouse for Complex User Tasks

Your application may involve some user tasks that are difficult to execute by using a remote control. You should instruct your users to use the keyboard and mouse for tasks that require lengthy text input, such as registration, or for any activities for which user security settings will produce non–Windows Media Center dialog boxes, such as downloading your application. (Note that you must programmatically exit DirectX exclusive mode for these Windows dialog boxes to appear correctly.) Typical instructions for this transition might read as follows:

To download this application, you must use your mouse and keyboard. If you have a mouse and keyboard available, click here with your mouse, and when the Not Designed for Windows Media Center dialog box appears, click View Now.

If you do not have a mouse and keyboard available at this location, click here, and when the Not Designed for Windows Media Center dialog box appears, select View Later. Then, go to the Windows Media Center PC that has the mouse and keyboard, and check for the "Windows Media Center Shortcuts" link on the desktop (this might take a few minutes to appear). Open the "<application name>" link in your Web browser, and follow the directions for downloading.
