When to use the alternative method

When creating a new portal page, you should connect your result viewer web parts on that page using the standard method of publishing and subscribing. Using the standard method means that Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) handles the communication between web parts. For information on connecting web parts using the standard method, see Standard Method of Publishing and Subscribing.

However, if your new portal page contains a Card Viewer or Content Viewer web part, you must use the alternative method of publishing and subscribing. Card Viewer and Content Viewer web parts don’t support the standard method of publishing and subscribing.

Keep in mind, that the method you select for publishing and subscribing applies to all web parts on a page. For example, consider the following Leads page from the Great Plains version of the BPSDK sample. This page contains a Primary Publishing List, Form Viewer, and Content Viewer. Because this page contains a Content Viewer, the alternative method of publishing and subscribing must be used for all web parts on the page. This means that the Primary Publishing List and the Content Viewer must communicate using the alternative method, and that the Primary Publishing List and the Form Viewer must communicate using the alternative method.
