A: The Windows Live OneCare Beta (v1.5) is going great! Thanks for attending tonight's chat.
Evan - WLOC Beta (Expert):
Q: Can we get a way to allow the system to be green when the phishing system is disabled intentionally. It causes a significant performance hit for something that can be manually triggered for suspicious sites.
A: The OneCare team is very dedicated to providing what customers want. If there is a change you want made to the product please submit a bug at connect.microsoft.com or if the bug/suggestion has already been submitted please validate & vote. It's your feedback that improves the product
Evan - WLOC Beta (Expert):
Q: Do you know when One Care will RTM out of Beta?
A: Windows Live OneCare v1.5 will launch on January 30th 2007 - please see the Nov 8th Blog post for details.

Q: I have purchased One Care, will I be able to Auto-Update to version 1.5 ???
A: If you have purchased a subscription to Windows Live OneCare then yes, OneCare will automatically update you to v1.5 when the time is right.
Evan - WLOC Beta (Moderator):
Q: I saw on usenet that several people reported getting auto-upgraded from OneCare 1.1 to 1.5 this evening. Is the upgrade being rolled out generally now to beta testers?
A: There is a beta testing group that was testing v1.1, that group is being upgraded to v1.5 beta.
Evan - WLOC Beta (Moderator):
Q: Tune up seems to take a very long time to run and a lot of resources. Is there a way to choose certain parts of the tune up to run without having the whole thing run at once?
A: Tuneups can be scheduled to run anytime of the day, week, etc when you are not using the computer for other tasks.
Evan - WLOC Beta (Moderator):

Evan - WLOC Beta (Moderator):
Q: I received an email to activate, I tried with out success. Should I be able to?
A: Windows Live OneCare Beta (v1.5) does not need to be activated for the duration of the beta. We've recently asked some testers to assist in an Activation test and we are now collecting feedback. Evan - WLOC Beta (Moderator):
Q: Evan @ Q20: If I am not around at the time of my machine has a custom application open that does not offer auto save Onecare forces a restart and I lose that data. Onecare should have an option 'Your machine needs a restart and not be forced option"

Evan - WLOC Beta (Moderator):
Q: All of the phishing filter bugs, suggestions I could find on Connect are resolved, closed, by design. Can we still vote?
A: Yes. You can still vote on a resolved bug. Resolving a bug as 'by design' communicates that there isn't a "bug", however, suggestions are always welcomed and help improve the product.
Evan - WLOC Beta (Moderator):
Q: Will Windows Live OneCare Family Safety be easy to disable for a kid? My son is as smart as an IT Guy, and I'm sure he will find a way to disable it!

NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: When I start Vista, OneCare sets the firewall for the wireless as restricted. Then about 15seconds later it sets it to automatic. Is there anyway to improve this check to see if it is a known network then set the firewall. If not what is it doing?
A: When Vista first connects to new network, it does not know which network it has connected to. Hence the network is unknown and we move you to restricted. After 15 seconds, Vista is able to recognize that you are connected to a known network which you previously marked private and notified OneCare. OneCare swtiches it back to automatic
Evan - WLOC Beta (Moderator):
Q: Evan, I am quite happy for you to drop the answers to my last few Q's into the transcript later.... If your fingers feel like mine... Get out of here and have a beer ;)
A: All the questions will be answered by the time we log off for the night, but it might be a bit before we catch up.
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: As a software developer, how do we go about getting our app on the firewall autoapprove list?
A: You should sign it with a certificate that can be chainted to a trusted root authority on the machine
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Any Chance if the google virus thingy will be solved? Cause i am still getting that virus thingy, and PCC07 is detecting a virus for MSN...
A: This issue should be resolved now. Please ensure you have the latest updates by clicking on "check for updates". If that does not work, please contact support
Evan - WLOC Beta (Moderator):
Q: Is the chat done??
A: The chat ends at 7pm Pacific, my watch says 6:55 - we have a few more minutes
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Trying to RDP to Vista from XP I need to disable the Onecare Firewall. I have the standard "Remote Desktop Connection" firewall rule enabled in Onecare, I have a manual TCP/UDP Port 3389 Rule Enabled and also 'Allow RDP from the sharing tab" Still no go?
A: Depending on how your network is setup, you may also need to enable "IPSec" rule. We had to do that in Microsoft. Also, in Vista remote desktop setting, please confirm that you are letting old Remote Desktop clients to connect.
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Why when Onecare 1.5 is installed on Vista Ultimate in the "Network and Sharing Center" can I not change "Network Discovery" or "File Sharing" On or Off due to "Windows has detected that you are using a firewall other than Windows Firewall"?
A: That is correct. Vista does not know how to change OneCare firewall. You will need to change them in OneCare Firewall settings. At this point, unfortunately we do not have a rule for Network discovery. We will be adding it soon. For file sharing, you should be able to do that in "Sharing" tab in advanced settings for firewall
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Will we get the ability to exclude drives or partitions from tune up?
A: Thanks for your feedback. However, we do not have any short term plans (next 3 months) to provide that functionality. We are always looking at this feature for our future releases
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Developing with Visual Studio 2005 under XP each debugging of an app can have a new version number. This means it needs to be added to OneCare firewall's list again. This is tedious and creates a huge list in OneCare over time. Can we allow any version?
A: Unfortunately NO, as OneCare firewall is hash based and that changes. You have multiple options
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Developing with Visual Studio 2005 under XP each debugging of an app can have a new version number. This means it needs to be added to OneCare firewall's list again. This is tedious and creates a huge list in OneCare over time. Can we allow any version?
A: 1. Add a new root authority to your machine. Sign your executable as part of build process
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):

A: 2. if you use specific ports, you can open those ports for everyone. This has security risk that you should evaluate
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Any plans for the WLOC Family Safety Settings to be integrated into WLOC?
A: Nothing we can share at this point
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: With 'NAP - Network Access Protection" being part of Longhorn Server (And Vista) how will a Laptop with Onecare Installed when connecting to the 'Corporate Network' via VPN, Local, Remote etc etc be affected by the policy compliance? (Tough one this Evan)
A: I am the PM owner and I will have to investigate this one for you. Unfortunately I do not have the answer for you at this time
Evan - WLOC Beta (Moderator):
Q: Any plans for the WLOC Family Safety Settings to be integrated into WLOC?
A: Integrating WLOC Family Safety Settings into WL OneCare (one install) hasn't been publicly announced.
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @Q1 - This feedback item is still 'Active' and is of a similar nature to the Wireless issue of Onecare and Network Detection https://connect.microsoft.com/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=223330\&SiteID;=168
A: We have spent considerable time on investigating this issue. At this point we need detailed firewall logs to help debug this further. You can help us by creating detailed firewall logs. Here is how you can create detailed packet logs.
Evan - WLOC Beta (Moderator):
Q: Will Windows Live One Care's Anti Virus be integrated with Windows Live Messenger? Instead of the Windows Live Safety Scanner, or a 3rd party Anti-Virus.
A: Integration of Windows Live OneCare with Windows Live Messenger hasn't been announced.
A: OneCare UI> Change Settigns>Logging> Make sure the checkbox for "detailed firewall" is set. Reboot. Reproduce the scenario. From the desktop, launch OneCare Support tool to create the logs. Send those logs to us via the connect tool. As detailed firewall logging causes degradation in performance, go back to logging tab, uncheck the checkbox and reboot, while we try to figure out the root cause. This bug is really bad when it happens and it has been frustrating for us as well as our users. We really appreciate any help in getting those logs to help us debug this
Evan - WLOC Beta (Moderator):
Q: Yep, Its Beta and all of that BUT..... What does 'Remove Unneccessary Files" in the 'Tune-Up' actual remove as when you click the help link there is no data... This is just plain scary....
A: It removes the unnecessary files; Windows Temp Files, Temp Internet Fiels, Office Temporary Files, etc for a full list please retry the "What files does Tune-up remove?" link in your client.
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @Q49 This probably relates more to the Vista Team, though this issue it makes 'Network and Sharing Center' look rather ordinary and in part it should work similar to the XP Security Center that it knows that an 'accepted' alternative Firewall is installed.
A: Unfortunately, Vista currently does not have functionality to pass instructions to 3rd party firewalls. Even if they did, I am not sure whether 3rd party firewalls would trust any configuration coming from anywhere but their own UI, as those instructions could be coming from malware. It is a tough tradeoff
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @Q64 - Yes to all... IPSec I would not have thought I would need to enable if I have the 'Downlevel RDP Client' option enabled.... I will give IPSec a Try
A: Hope it helps
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @Q86 - Thats fine NGARG, It is a tough one and I only learnt about NAP at the Vista Ready Summit here on Wednesday and it was an issue bought up in the forum there and no one had an answer except that it would fail the compliance checks. Longhorn Referal
A: Thanks for bringing this up.
Evan - WLOC Beta (Moderator):
Q: When I ran OneCare 1.5 on Vista it had subsumed Windows Defender, except that Software Explorer was missing. Will we get Software Explorer back?
A: This is a great question, I'll pass it along
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Retry of an earlier question... When I run OneCare 1.5 on Vista it has subsumed Windows Defender, except that Software Explorer is missing. Will we get Software Explorer back in OneCare 1.5 as I've always found it useful.
A: At this point, we do not have any plans to share. We do understand that this is an issue for our customers and looking for options to remediate it
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @Q90 - This only happens when Onecare is first installed, after it knows the network so it cannot create the detailed logs as it is functional now.
A: Glad to know that it is working for you now. Bummer for us :( as we could not get logs to debug this
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: Is One Care also Compatible with Longhorn?
A: 1.5 version is and it will ship at the same time as Vista is generally available. You can install our beta today
NGARG[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: @Q91: Just Enable IPSec Firewall rule and still does not work.
A: Please confirm that it works with firewall disabled to ensure that this is a firewall problem. Apologies for your problems. Please create detailed firewall logs as I listed before and pass it to us via the connect tool
Evan - WLOC Beta (Moderator):
That's it for tonight folks. Thank you all very much for attending the chat and making Windows Live OneCare the best it can be!
