Understand Bargein

This content is no longer actively maintained. It is provided as is, for anyone who may still be using these technologies, with no warranties or claims of accuracy with regard to the most recent product version or service release.

Bargein occurs when the user of a speech recognition application interrupts a prompt, using speech or dual tone multi-frequency (DTMF) input. When bargein occurs, playback of the prompt is halted. This feature is particularly useful for end users who are familiar with the application because it allows them to proceed through the dialog more quickly.

In SALT (Speech Application Language Tags), the prompt.bargein attribute specifies whether the prompt is interruptible when voice or DTMF input is detected. In VoiceXML, the same function is performed by the bargein attribute.

For more information about bargein in Speech Server applications, see How to: Simulate Bargein While Debugging and BargeIn (Managed Code Sample).
