When a Mail Gateway object is created in Microsoft® Active Directory®, Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server creates a special mailbox for the gateway in the mailbox store of the server. This mailbox includes two folders that are used as message queues: MTS-IN and MTS-OUT. The server places e-mail addressed to the foreign system in the MTS-OUT folder, and the gateway service places messages that it has received and processed from the foreign system in the MTS-IN folder. The gateway uses MAPI functions and methods to access these folders.
