Rules About Folder Trees and MDBs

This content is no longer actively maintained. It is provided as is, for anyone who may still be using these technologies, with no warranties or claims of accuracy with regard to the most recent product version or service release.

Logical constraints to using folder trees include:

  • Each public store must be associated with one and only one folder tree.
  • A public store cannot be associated with the folder tree of another public store on the same server.
  • A public store can be associated with a folder tree of a public store on another server. For more information, see Folder Tree Replication.

The following diagram shows how these rules are applied in an incomplete folder tree and server configuration.

Diagram showing folder tree rules.

Public Store B must be associated with a folder tree, but it cannot be Folder Tree 1 (because Folder Tree 1 is already associated with a store on the server).

Folder Tree 2 cannot be associated with Public Store A (because Public Store A is already associated with a folder tree).

Public Store 2A can be associated with Folder Tree 1 (because it is on a remote server). Public Store 2A may be a replica of Public Store A, depending on the replication configuration and whether Public Store 2A contains data also stored in Public Store A.
