Content Sources

New content sources can be added to the workspace to access content outside of the Document Library. The Gatherer and Filter Daemon are two components of the Microsoft Search (MSSearch) services responsible for including documents in an index in a content source. For an item to be included in an index, its contents must first be filtered. The Gatherer examines the list of items in a content source and determines which items must be filtered. It associates a URL with each item, and queues the items for further examination by the Filter Daemon. The Filter Daemon is responsible for processing the URLs given to it from the Gatherer. It employs IFilters and Protocol Handlers to process each URL and return information about the item back to the Gatherer. After the information is indexed, you can run full-text searches by using Structured Query Language (SQL-based) queries.
