Designing Speech Applications
Speech system design is both a science and an art. There are not many rules that govern the process, but there are a number of design principles that are useful to understand. Many of these principles are straightforward to use and easy to evaluate in the design of a Voice User Interface (VUI). Others have more subtle implications and their effects on the overall design are more subjective and therefore difficult to quantify. While some of the concepts discussed here are theoretical in nature, the document also introduces a number of concrete concepts in the context of the Speech Application SDK (SASDK) for use in designing English-language speech systems.
