How to Set Connection Limits for POP3

This topic describes how use the Exchange Management Console and the Exchange Management Shell to set the connection limits on the Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 computer that has the Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) service enabled. In the original release (RTM) version of Exchange 2007, you could only set connection limits for POP3 by using the Exchange Management Shell. In Exchange 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1), you can also set connection limits for POP3 by using the Exchange Management Console. Steps for doing this are included in this topic.

When you specify connection limits for POP3, you can select connection limits for the server, IP address, or a specific user. The following table describes the three settings for connection limits.

Before You Begin

To perform this procedure, the account you use must be delegated the Exchange Server Administrator role and membership in the local Administrators group for the target server.

Note

After you set connection limits, you must restart the POP3 service. For more information about how to restart the POP3 service, see How to Start and Stop the POP3 Service.

Procedure

Exchange 2007 SP1

To use the Exchange Management Console to set POP3 connection limits for a server, IP address, or a user for POP3

  1. In the console tree, expand Server Configuration, and then click Client Access.

  2. In the work pane, click the POP3 and IMAP4 tab.

  3. In the work pane, select POP3 and then, in the result pane, click Properties.

  4. On the IMAP4 Properties page, click the Connections tab.

  5. Under Connection Limits, specify the following:

    1. To set the connection limit for a server, enter a value between 1 and 25,000 in the box next to Maximum connections.

    2. To set the connection limit for an IP address, enter a value between 1 and 1,000 in the box next to Maximum connections from a single IP address.

    3. To set the connection limit for a single user, enter a value between 1 and 1,000 in the box next to Maximum connections from a single user.

  6. Click Apply, and then click OK to save your changes.

To use the Exchange Management Shell to set POP3 connection limits for a server, IP address, or a user

  • To set the connection limit for a server, run the following command:

    Set-PopSettings -Identity CAS01 -MaxConnections Value

  • To set the connection limit for an IP address, run the following command:

    Set-PopSettings -Identity CAS01 -MaxConnectionsFromSingleIP Value

  • To set the connection limit for a user, run the following command:

    Set-PopSettings -MaxConnectionsPerUser Value

To use the Exchange Management Shell to set POP3 connection limits for a server, IP address, or a user

  • To set the connection limit for a server, run the following command:

    Set-PopSettings -Identity CAS01 -MaxConnections Value

  • To set the connection limit for an IP address, run the following command:

    Set-PopSettings -Identity CAS01 -MaxConnectionsFromSingleIP Value

  • To set the connection limit for a user, run the following command:

    Set-PopSettings -MaxConnectionsPerUser Value
