How to Recover Quarantined Messages from the Spam Quarantine Mailbox

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 will reach end of support on April 11, 2017. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.

Applies to: Exchange Server 2007, Exchange Server 2007 SP1, Exchange Server 2007 SP2, Exchange Server 2007 SP3

This topic explains how to use Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 to recover a quarantined message from the spam quarantine mailbox. When a message meets the spam quarantine threshold, it is wrapped in a non-delivery report (NDR) and delivered to the spam quarantine mailbox. For more information about how to set up the Exchange organization to use the spam quarantine feature, see Configuring and Managing Spam Quarantine.

In Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, spam quarantine is a feature of the Content Filter agent that reduces the risk of losing legitimate messages. Spam quarantine provides a temporary storage location for messages that are identified as spam and that should not be delivered to a user mailbox inside the organization. For more information, see Spam Quarantine.

In addition, to help with account management, we recommend that you configure the Outlook profile to expose the original sender field in the Message view. This procedure is covered in more detail later in this topic.

Before You Begin

To recover a quarantined message, you must log on to the spam quarantine mailbox using the spam quarantine mailbox user profile. Logging onto a spam quarantine mailbox with another profile is not supported, even if the other user for that profile has owner rights on the spam quarantine mailbox.

Procedure

To use Outlook 2007 to recover a quarantined message

  1. In Outlook 2007 on a client computer, find the NDR of the message that you want to recover.

  2. Double-click the NDR to open it.

  3. In the Respond group of the Report tab, click Send Again.

  4. When the e-mail message opens, click Send to resend the e-mail message to the intended recipient.

Before you can configure Outlook 2007 to expose the original sender field in the message view, you must create an Outlook form that has a .cfg file name extension. The following procedure explains how to create the Outlook Quarantine Extension Form, which is named QTNE.cfg. After you have created QTNE.cfg, you can then configure Outlook 2007 to expose the original sender field in the message view.

To create QTNE.cfg

  1. Open an ASCII text editor, such as Notepad, and copy the following code into the document.

    [Description]
    MessageClass=IPM.Note

    NmidInteger=1
    Value=1000000000000000

  2. Save the file as QTNE.cfg in the forms directory at <systemdrive>:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE12\FORMS\Language ID, as, for example, C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE12\FORMS\1033.

To configure Outlook 2007 to expose the original sender field in the message view

  5. Close the Forms Manager dialog box, and then, by clicking OK, close the remaining dialog boxes and return to the main Outlook interface.

  6. In the default message view of Outlook, in the Inbox, right-click the column heading row, and then select Field Chooser.
