How to Configure Your System for the AD RMS Prelicensing Agent

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 will reach end of support on April 11, 2017. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.

Applies to: Exchange Server 2007 SP1, Exchange Server 2007 SP2, Exchange Server 2007 SP3

This topic explains how to configure the system to use the Active Directory Rights Management Services (AD RMS) Prelicensing agent. By default, the AD RMS Prelicensing agent is not enabled on the Hub Transport server when Exchange 2007 is installed.

The AD RMS Prelicensing agent is included in Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1). You must be running Exchange 2007 SP1 on all Hub Transport servers in your organization to enable the AD RMS functionality in Exchange 2007.

Before You Begin

To perform this procedure, the account you use must be delegated the Exchange Server Administrator role and local Administrators group for the target servers. For more information about permissions, delegating roles, and the rights that are required to administer Exchange Server 2007, see Permission Considerations.

Procedure

To configure the system to run the AD RMS Prelicensing agent

  1. Install Windows RMS Client 1.0 SP2 or Active Directory Rights Management Services client on Windows Server 2008 – X64 on all Hub Transport servers in your organization.

    Note

Active Directory Rights Management Services client is installed by default on Windows Server 2008 - X64.

    Note

For information about how to download RMS Client with SP2, see Windows Rights Management Services Client with Service Pack 2 - X64.

  2. Verify that the AD RMS administrator has installed RMS Server 1.0 SP2 or Active Directory Rights Management Services on Windows Server 2008 – X64 on the server or server cluster.

  3. Enable the AD RMS Prelicensing agent on all Hub Transport servers in your organization. After you enable the AD RMS Prelicensing agent, Exchange 2007 e-mail recipients receive e-mail messages where the authentication licensing has been completed. For more information, see How to Disable or Enable the AD RMS Prelicensing Agent.
