Set Permissions Button is Unavailable When Configuring Permissions for a Resource Mailbox

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 will reach end of support on April 11, 2017. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.

Applies to: Exchange Server 2007, Exchange Server 2007 SP1

This topic provides information about why the Set Permissions button is unavailable in Microsoft Outlook when configuring permissions for a resource mailbox.

In Office Outlook 2007, you can configure resource scheduling options by clicking the Resource Scheduling button in calendar options. This opens the Resource Scheduling dialog box. The text in this dialog box states "You must give users permission to view and edit this calendar if you want these options to work offline." However, the Set Permissions button is unavailable.

Resolution

This issue occurs if all of the following are true:

  • The resource mailbox is on a server that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2007.

  • There are no public folders in your Exchange 2007 organization.

In Exchange 2007, you should use room or equipment mailboxes for resource management. The permissions and scheduling options for these mailboxes are configured using the Exchange Management Shell or the Exchange Management Console. You do not need to log on to these mailboxes using Outlook to configure any parameters.

Note

By default, the user accounts for all new resource mailboxes are disabled in Exchange 2007.

Resource Mailboxes in Exchange 2007

In previous versions of Exchange, to create a mailbox that is used as a resource, you first had to create a regular user mailbox. Then, you had to configure this mailbox either as an Outlook direct booking mailbox or an Auto Accept agent-based mailbox.

Exchange 2007 provides a specific mailbox type called a resource mailbox that is designed for resource scheduling. When you migrate or upgrade to Exchange 2007, you should convert all of your mailboxes that are used for scheduling resources to room or equipment mailboxes to take advantage of the reliable resource management features for Exchange 2007.

For detailed steps about converting an Auto Accept agent-based mailbox to an Exchange 2007 resource mailbox, see How to Upgrade Exchange 2003 Auto Accept Agent-Based Resource Mailboxes to Exchange 2007.
