Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 will reach end of support on April 11, 2017. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.

Applies to: Exchange Server 2007

The General tab displays general information about the recipient. Use this tab to view or modify the display name, alias, message format, and custom attributes. You can also specify whether to hide the recipient from Exchange address lists.

  • Display Name
Use the text box at the top of the page to view or change the display name for the recipient.
  • Organizational unit
This field displays the organizational unit (OU) that contains the recipient.
  • Modified
This field displays the last date and time a configuration change was made to the recipient.

    Note

Configuration changes made through any other method, such as the Exchange Management Shell or Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) Edit, will also update this field.

  • Alias
Use this text box to view or change the alias of the recipient. The alias cannot exceed 64 characters and must be unique in the forest. One of the reasons why the alias field must be unique is because it is used to generate the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) address in a default installation.
  • Use MAPI rich text format
Use this list to specify how messages in MAPI Rich Text Format (RTF) will be handled for this recipient. Select one of the following options:

    Note

If the MAPI RTF setting is configured for the remote e-mail domain that contains a recipient's e-mail address, that setting will override the setting that is configured for the individual contact.

    • Always   Select this option to always send MAPI RTF messages to the recipient.

      Note

Some third-party messaging systems may not correctly process MAPI RTF messages. Before you select this option, you should ensure that the messaging system that handles the recipient's e-mail is capable of processing MAPI RTF.

    • Never   Select this option to never send MAPI RTF messages to the recipient. If you select this option, all messages that are sent to the recipient will be converted to plain text.

    • Use Default Settings   If you select this option, the message format will be based on the setting in the MAPI client.

  • Hide from Exchange address lists
Select this check box to prevent the recipient from appearing in the global address list (GAL) and other address lists that are defined in your Exchange organization.

    Note

After you select this check box, users in your Exchange organization can still send messages to the mailbox user by using the e-mail address.

  • Custom Attributes
Click Custom Attributes to open the Custom Attributes dialog box. You can specify up to 15 custom attributes for the recipient.

To specify the custom attribute value, use the corresponding text box for each custom attribute, and then click OK.

For more information about the Custom Attributes dialog box, see Recipient Properties > General Tab > Custom Attributes (RTM).
