Cannot Create Mailbox with Parenthesis in Mailbox Store Name

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 will reach end of support on April 11, 2017. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.

This topic provides information about how to troubleshoot mailbox creation failure with Event ID 8325.

If this error occurs, event log errors are generated with the following information:

Event ID: 8325

Description: The service can't work properly because Email Address Policy 'CN=Fabrikam,CN=RecipientPolicies,CN=Contoso,CN=MicrosoftExchange,CN=Services,CN=Configuration,DC=<root domain>,DC=com' has an invalid filter rule (PurportedSearch). The error is 'Invalid token'. Use the Exchange Management Console to correct this problem. New users, contacts, and groups won't be fully provisioned until this is fixed.

This issue occurs when the mailbox store name contains a parenthesis. Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 uses OPATH filters instead of Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) filters and does not recognize the parenthesis or ampersand (&) symbols in filters.

Before You Begin

To perform this procedure, the account you use must be delegated the following:

  • Membership in the local Administrators group

For more information about permissions, delegating roles, and the rights that are required to administer Exchange 2007, see Permission Considerations.

Resolution

To resolve the problem, use the Exchange Management Console to remove the parenthesis from the mailbox store name.
