The following list of hotfixes are required to be installed on all Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 servers deployed into Contoso's production environment.

This list is a sample list and must be updated to reflect the actual list of fixes that are required for your organization. The list you choose to deploy as part of your standard server build should always be validated in a lab environment to ensure that all functionality behaves as expected.

Windows Server 2003

Install the hotfixes in the order listed. Hotfixes are ordered based on version numbers beginning with the lower versions and ending with the higher versions.

Be sure to install the service packs or hotfixes on the Client Access servers before upgrading the back-end servers.

Hotfixes

• Download all security hotfixes for the operating system from Microsoft Security Bulletin Search.

• August 2008 cumulative time zone update for Microsoft Windows operating systems

• Availability of a Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) update rollup package for Windows Server 2003 to resolve some VSS snapshot issues

• A Windows Server 2003-based computer becomes unresponsive because of a memory manager trimming operation that is caused by an indeterminate module that requests lots of memory

• An update to turn off default SNP features is available for Windows Server 2003-based and Small Business Server 2003-based computers

• A Cluster node may lose an MNS quorum, and the Cluster service may stop on a Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition-based computer

• A Scalable Networking Pack (SNP) hotfix rollup package is available for Windows Server 2003

• The system may not detect that a logical unit was replaced on a Windows Server 2003-based computer

For clustered servers, download and install the following:

• Recommended hotfixes for Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2-based server clusters

Windows Server 2008

Install the hotfixes in the order listed. Hotfixes are ordered based on version numbers beginning with the lower versions and ending with the higher versions.

Be sure to install the service packs or hotfixes on the Client Access servers before upgrading the back-end servers.

Hotfixes

• Download all security hotfixes for the operating system from Microsoft Security Bulletin Search.

• December 2008 cumulative time zone update for Microsoft Windows operating systems

• A memory leak occurs in performance counters that are used to monitor Windows Server 2008-based computers

• A handle leak occurs in a Server Message Block (SMB) session between computers that are running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

• A memory leak occurs on an RPC server that is running Windows Server 2008 after the RPC server function runs an RPC client callback function

• An application may crash when it uses legacy methods to query performance counter values in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008

• A Windows Vista-based computer or a Windows Server 2008-based computer may stop responding during shutdown after you install a series of hotfixes and then try to restart the computer

• An application is unable to obtain an exclusive lock to a volume after the system runs for several hours in Windows Server 2008 or in Windows Vista Service Pack 1

• You experience a nonpaged pool memory leak when you unmap and then remap Microsoft MPIO-based logical unit number to a Windows Server 2008-based computer

• The DeviceType registry entry value is truncated when the Microsoft Storport driver is installed on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista

• You cannot create multiple RMS Client sessions for one user context on a Windows Vista-based computer

• The words "Friendster," "Klum," "Nazr," "Obama," and "Racicot" are not recognized when you check the spelling in Windows Vista and in Windows Server 2008

• Script output is not displayed as expected when you run VBScript or JScript scripts in Windows Vista Service Pack 1, in Windows Server 2008, or in Windows XP Service Pack 3

• Description of the Jet 4.0 Database Engine hotfix package for Windows XP SP2, Windows Server 2003 SP1, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista, Windows Vista SP1, and Windows Server 2008: October 23, 2007

• An application that uses the ADO interface may malfunction, or data loss may occur when the application connects to SQL Server in Windows Vista, in Windows XP, or in Windows Server 2008

• The August 2008 Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 Application Compatibility Update is available

• A hotfix is available that addresses a memory leak in the Virtual Disk Service on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

• A Windows Vista-based or Windows Server 2008-based computer may stop responding during a storage stress test or under similar conditions

• A hotfix rollup is available for the out-of-band WebDAV module for IIS 7.0

For Failover Clustering, download and install the following:

• You cannot install device drivers in a Windows Server 2008 cluster environment if the drivers contain LZ-compressed files

• When you stop a node in a Windows Server 2008 failover cluster, the groups that are hosted on that node may fail over to a random node instead of to the next available node

• When you run the Validate a Configuration Wizard on a Windows Server 2008-based computer or on a Windows Vista-based computer, the validation does not pass

• Scheduled shadow copy creation tasks do not run on a clustered Windows Server 2008 file server after a failover occurs

• A physical disk resource may unexpectedly fail or go offline when the IsAlive function is executed on a Windows Server 2008 cluster node

• Incorrect status codes that are returned in failover clusters may cause operations to fail on a Windows Server 2008-based computer
