Install Jetstress 2010

Applies to: Exchange Server 2010 SP1, Exchange Server 2010

Topic Last Modified: 2012-07-23

You start the Jetstress process by downloading the Jetstress package. Jetstress 2010 supports Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, Exchange Server 2007, and Exchange Server 2003. We recommend that you download the latest version of Jetstress 2010 before you run any tests. Keep track of the date when you downloaded the last version, and verify that you have the most recent version.

Important

Jetstress testing should be performed before you install Microsoft Exchange on the server.

Prerequisites

Make sure that you have Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 or later installed on the server where you'll be running Jetstress. Microsoft .NET Framework is required to run both JetstressWin.exe and JetstressCmd.exe. Make sure that Exchange is not installed on any of the servers you will use for your testing.

Understand Interaction of Jetstress 2010 and Database Engine Counters

If you're testing with a different version of the Exchange database engine than the one installed with Exchange 2010, you may have to uninstall the existing Exchange database engine counters before you run Jetstress. You can do this by typing the following at a command prompt:

unlodctr ESE

However, you will still have to uninstall and reinstall the Exchange version of the Exchange database engine counters when testing is completed. For more information, see "Database performance counters not working after using Jetstress" in Troubleshooting Jetstress 2010.

Install JetStress 2010

The installation of Jetstress 2010 requires that you complete the following tasks:

  1. Copy the ESE binary files.

  2. Install the Jetstress application.

  3. Install the ESE binary files.

See the following sections for detailed procedures.

Copy ESE Binary Files to Configure Jetstress 2010

To obtain the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) binaries that you need to configure Jetstress 2010, do the following:

  • If you don't have Exchange Server 2010 currently, go to Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, and download the trial evaluation version of Exchange 2010. Then, copy the following ESE binary files from D:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Test\ESE\esetest\bin\common to the Jetstress 2010 installation location:

    • ese.dll

    • eseperf.dll

    • eseperf.hxx

    • eseperf.ini

    • eseperf.xml

      Note

Your default installation for Exchange could be different from the example location for the ESE binaries above.

  • If you already have Exchange 2010 installed, or a copy of the Exchange installation media, copy the binaries listed below to the Jetstress 2010 installation location.

Location of ESE binary files from a server with Exchange installed

    File Path

    ese.dll

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Bin

    eseperf.dll

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Bin\perf\AMD64

    eseperf.hxx

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Bin\perf\AMD64

    eseperf.ini

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Bin\perf\AMD64

    eseperf.xml

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Bin\perf\AMD64

Location of ESE binary files from the installation media

    File Path

    ese.dll

    \setup\serverroles\common

    eseperf.dll

    \setup\serverroles\common\perf\amd64

    eseperf.hxx

    \setup\serverroles\common\perf\amd64

    eseperf.ini

    \setup\serverroles\common\perf\amd64

    eseperf.xml

Install Jetstress 2010

  1. Download Jetstress 2010 from the Microsoft Download Center:

  2. Save the download package to a temporary location, (for example, C:\Jetstress_temp).

  3. Start the Jetstress installer by double-clicking the Jetstress.msi file (C:\Jetstress_temp\jetstress.msi).

  4. On the Welcome page, click Next.

  5. On the License Agreement page, you can accept the agreement, and then click Next.

    Note

All performance data and HTML reports are stored in the installation folder.

  6. On the Select Installation Folder page, you can install to the default folder or Browse to install to another location, and then click Next. You can also choose to install Jetstress 2010 for everyone who uses this computer or only for the Administrator who is currently logged on.

  7. On the Confirm Installation page, click Next to install Jetstress 2010.

  8. On the Installation Complete page, click Close to exit the installation wizard.

Install ESE Binary Files

  1. Copy the ESE binary files into the Jetstress installation folder. By default, this folder is “C:\Program Files\Exchange Jetstress”.

  2. Click Start, and then click Exchange Jetstress 2010.

    Note

Jetstress requires local Administrator access. If user access control is enabled, ensure that you start the JetstressWin.exe process as an administrator.

  3. Click Start new test. Jetstress attempts to use the ESE files that you copied earlier. The first time this attempt occurs Jetstress must be restarted. Verify in the output on this screen that the ESE version matches your downloaded version and that the last line of the status output requires that Jetstress be restarted.

  4. Close Jetstress, and then restart it to launch your first test.
