This article provides a collection of resources to help you understand potential issues around Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 performance, and to assist you in configuring features for best performance in your organization.

To help ensure that Office Outlook 2007 is performing well, install the most recent update for Office Outlook 2007. For a description of the update and links to the update, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 933493: Description of the update for Outlook 2007: April 13, 2007 (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=90637).

Cached Exchange Mode

To improve Office Outlook 2007 performance on highly latent networks, we recommend that users of Outlook 2003 or Office Outlook 2007 use Cached Exchange Mode, where users work with a local cache of their mailboxes. If Cached Exchange Mode is not possible, then we recommend that online users on highly latent networks turn off the To-Do Bar feature to eliminate additional server calls.

For information about how to configure Cached Exchange Mode, see Configure Cached Exchange Mode in Outlook 2007.

For information about how to turn off the To-Do Bar feature, see Turn the To-Do Bar on or off (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=108197).

Windows Desktop Search and Outlook 2007

There are many ways to configure Windows Desktop Search and Instant Search that can help reduce indexing time or improve performance in other ways. For details about configuration options, see the following articles:

For more information about how Windows Desktop Search works with Outlook, see Windows Desktop Search 3.01 Administration Guide (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=101474). For help in determining the best desktop search solution for the versions of Windows and Outlook used in your organization, see Windows Search Version Guidance (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=101475).

OST and PST size: impact on performance

The size of the local files Outlook uses for accessing items can impact Outlook performance. For information about managing users' Offline Folder (OST) and Personal Folders (PST) files, see the following articles:

Changed features: impact and support documentation

The new features in Office Outlook 2007 are documented in the following article: Changes in Outlook 2007.

Changes in the Outlook editor can cause HTML newsletters to display incorrectly. For information, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 933793: Outlook 2007 uses only Word as the e-mail editor (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=101489).

In addition, many of the rich features in the Office Outlook 2007 editor require Microsoft Office Word 2007 to be installed. You can learn about which features are not supported when you install Office Outlook 2007 without Office Word 2007 by reading: Impact of deploying Outlook 2007 without Word 2007.
