Customize the 2007 Office system to work with a non-Microsoft e-mail application

If you plan to deploy the 2007 Microsoft Office system to work with a non-Microsoft e-mail application, such as Lotus Notes, Gmail, or Juno, you might need to customize Setup to enable e-mail functionality within the 2007 Office system and for applications that are not part of the Office suite, such as Internet Explorer. You can do this as part of the 2007 Office system deployment configuration by using the Office Customization Tool (OCT). If the 2007 Office system has already been deployed and you install a new e-mail application, you might need to use the OCT to change the users’ customizations to enable e-mail functionality.
For the following scenarios, you will need to make one of the Setup customizations covered in this article to enable e-mail functionality for other applications:
You are deploying the 2007 Office system, without Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 or earlier, to work with a non-Microsoft e-mail application.
You are deploying the 2007 Office system with Office Outlook 2007 and you want the non-Microsoft e-mail application to be the default e-mail client.
You are going to add Office Outlook 2007 to an existing 2007 Office system installation but want your existing non-Microsoft e-mail application to remain as the default e-mail client.
Office Outlook 2007 is installed but you need a non-Microsoft e-mail application to be the default e-mail client.
The first two scenarios are covered in the “Maintain a non-Microsoft e-mail application as your default e-mail client” section. The last two scenarios are covered in the “Change the default e-mail client for an existing deployment” section.
If you have already deployed the 2007 Office system but plan to deploy Office Outlook 2007 later, use the Set feature installation states area of customization in the OCT to deploy Office Outlook 2007. Maintain a non-Microsoft e-mail application as your default e-mail client
To start the Office Customization Tool, from the root of the network installation point, run the following command at the command prompt:
\\server\share\ setup.exe /admin
To edit an existing Setup customization (MSP) file, in the Select Product dialog box, click Open an existing Setup customization file. Or to create a new customization file, select the Office suite that you want to customize, and then click OK.

If you are deploying the 2007 Office system, without Office Outlook 2007 or earlier, to work with a non-Microsoft e-mail application, follow these steps in the OCT:

In the navigation pane, in the Setup area, click Modify Setup properties.
Click Add to add the following names and values that are appropriate.

The names of these properties are case-sensitive and must be typed in all uppercase letters. Not all the properties are required. For example, if you only want to keep Office Outlook 2007 from being the default e-mail client, use only the OUTLOOKASDEFAULTMAILAPP property.
If you are deploying the 2007 Office system without Office Outlook 2007 to work with a non-Microsoft e-mail application and the client computers already have some version of Outlook installed, you do not need to make any special customizations in the OCT.
To save the MSP file, on the File menu, click Save.
Exit the OCT.
Put the MSP file in the Office installation source \Updates folder.
Install the 2007 Office system from the original installation source.
Change the default e-mail client for an existing deployment
To start the Office Customization Tool, from the root of the network installation point, run the following command at the command prompt:

To determine the correct name to use for the value data for these registry entries, follow these steps:
Start Internet Explorer.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
On the Programs tab, click the E-mail list or Set Programs depending on the browser version. Determine the name of the e-mail client that you want to configure as the default e-mail client. Use that name as the value data for the registry entry.
Similarly, you can find the value data for the default calendar client and for the default contacts client from the Programs tab of the Internet Options properties page.
If a non-Microsoft e-mail application is already installed and you then install Office Outlook 2007, Office Outlook 2007 will automatically be set as the default e-mail client after installation. Use the Set feature installation states area of customization in the OCT to deploy Office Outlook 2007. To save the MSP file, on the File menu, click Save.
Exit the OCT.
To apply the MSP file to the clients, double-click the MSP file, or run the following command at the command prompt:
msiexec.exe /p file path\ filename.msp
Install the 2007 Office system from the original installation source.
