This article describes a content and test plan outline for planning and deploying an Enterprise Project Management (EPM)/Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 extranet environment. To see an overview of other articles in this guide, see Plan and deploy an EPM and SharePoint Server 2007 extranet environment.

Content and test plan outline

The content developed as part of this effort provides detailed descriptions of the steps that are required to deploy the EPM-focused Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 solution in an extranet.

The final result of this effort is a set of best practices and recommendations provided by Microsoft for a successful and secure deployment of an EPM-Focused Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 farm on the extranet.

The Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Office Project Server 2007 solution delivers a powerful set of features and capabilities that enable participation of users across many roles. The roles range from project managers, contributors, resource managers to executives and contributors.

The scenarios and focus areas defined for the system testing are based on agreed upon feature areas of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 useful for an EPM Focused Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 solution, available EPM Solution capabilities and typical EPM end-user audience processes. For each scenario, the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and EPM Solution components that are required to provide full or partial coexistence experience are defined. For each scenario and focus area, series of detailed test case scenarios are defined and developed. All test cases are executed and results thoroughly documented.

Testing: In scope

The following test categories are performed:

  • System-Level Testing including Integration and Coexistence of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Office Project Server 2007 components in the same farm. These tests are performed to fully exercise the whole Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and EPM solutions to ensure that all system elements function correctly.

  • Feature Areas Coexistence Testing

  • These tests are performed to verify functionality of the major Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Feature Areas and validate coexistence with EPM Solution in the same farm.

  • Unstructured Tests — Optional

  • Define additional ad-hoc or exploratory testing that will be performed. Identify the scope and the time associated with this form of testing.

Testing: Out of scope

The following test categories are not performed:

  • Forced-Error Tests

  • Provide a list of all system error conditions and messages. Identify the tests that will be run to force the system into error conditions.

  • Stress Tests

  • Identify the limits under which the program is expected to perform. These may include maximum number of transactions per unit of time, throughput per unit of time, memory, network and disk I/O constraints, and so on.

  • Performance Tests

  • Review the functional requirements that specify acceptable system performance. Identify the functions that have to be measured and the tests required to show conformance to the requirements.

Assumptions

  • The following elements are required to support the overall testing effort for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Office Project Server 2007 solution coexistence:

  • Separate networks to simulate the Internet and other networks’ domains

  • Routers and Microsoft ISA Server 2006 SP1 installed and configured depending on the extranet scenario tested.

  • SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Enterprise and Office Project Server 2007 bits installed with proper service pack and cumulative update levels

  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 settings are configured

  • All relevant Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Feature Areas are installed, enabled and configured

  • All required Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 data elements ( lists, document libraries, Web sites etc.) required to support all test cases are created

  • Office Project Server 2007 settings are configured ( Project Portfolio Server 2007 will not be tested)

  • User accounts are defined and configured

  • User roles/groups are defined

  • Categories are defined

  • Security model and its permissions are defined and configured

  • Data elements required to support all test cases such as schedules, tasks, resources, assignments, templates, views, filters and so on are defined and configured

Important

Prior to the start of testing activities, the Office Project Server 2007 Resource Kit – Playbooks Tool will be used to capture and back up all Office Project Server 2007 system configuration settings. Other tools from the Office Project Server 2007 Resource Kit and the CodePlex site may be used during testing.

Proposed feature areas of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 validated for coexistence and usage with EPM

The following Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 feature areas will be validated for coexistence specifically in an extranet context.

  • Excel Calculation Services (ECS)

  • KPIs and Web Parts

  • Workflow

  • Record Center

  • Business Data Catalog (BDC)

  • Search

  • InfoPath Forms Services

  • SharePoint Usage Reporting

  • Personalization Services

The following Microsoft Office Project Server 2007 feature areas will be validated for coexistence specifically in an extranet context.

  • Access to and operation of Office Project Web Access 2007

  • Connection from Project Professional 2007 to an instance of Office Project Server 2007

  • Access to Project Workspaces for extranet users if it is allowed

  • User authentication through Integrated Windows Authentication and Forms Authentication

Three scenarios identified for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and EPM 2007 coexistence

  1. Extend a farm with EPM 2007 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 coexisting to the extranet in an edge firewall topology

  2. Extend a farm with EPM 2007 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 coexisting to the extranet in a back-to-back perimeter topology

  3. Extend a farm with EPM 2007 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 coexisting to the extranet in a split back-to-back topology

SharePoint Server 2007 and EPM system configuration components testing for coexistence

System Components testing will include functional testing of the main architectural components of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and EPM such as Site Collections, Shared Services, Security trimming, and so on.

For the previous three scenarios, as a start, the following configuration areas should be explored, tested and the best practices recommendations documented:
