Plan browser support (Project Server 2010)

This article describes supported Web browsers for connecting to Microsoft Project Server 2010 and other considerations that have to be made in planning for them.
Supported browsers
Microsoft Project Web App access to Project Server 2010 is only supported for the following Web browsers:
Windows Internet Explorer 11
Windows Internet Explorer 10
Windows Internet Explorer 9
Windows Internet Explorer 8
Windows Internet Explorer 7
In order to access Project Server 2010 through Project Web App, users must have Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 8, or Internet Explorer 9. If you attempt to use other browsers such as Firefox and Safari for Project Web App access to Project Server 2010, the page will not load because these browsers are explicitly blocked. This is important to know, especially if you are using other applications that are designed specifically to work with other browsers or earlier versions of Internet Explorer.
Important
The Project Server 2010 Service Pack 1 update provides support for additional Web browsers to access Project Web App pages that are most frequently used by team members. Following are the additional supported Web browsers:

Firefox 3.6.8+ on Mac OS X v10.6, Windows 7 (32-bit/64-bit), Windows Vista SP2, Windows XP SP3, Windows Server 2003 and UNIX/Linux

If your organization plans to implement Windows 7 on the desktop and you have internal applications that require Internet Explorer 6, you may want to consider the XP Mode feature of Windows 7 for Internet Explorer 6 support while keeping Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8 on the native desktop for other applications, such as Project Server. Another option is for your Project Web App users to access Project Server 2010 through a Terminal Server connection on which the host computer uses Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8. If you are upgrading from an earlier version of Project Server, you may have to upgrade your Project Web App users to newer versions of Internet Explorer, because previous versions of Project Server had different Web browser requirements:

Editing grids in Project Web App with Internet Explorer 9
If you use Internet Explorer 9 to access either Office Project Server 2007 or Project Server 2010, you may encounter a small issue with editing grids on certain pages. On these specific pages, when the entire contents of an editable cell are deleted, data cannot be added to the cell until the page is refreshed. If you modify the content of a cell on these pages, you must ensure that all the content of the cell is not completely removed. To completely replace the contents of the cell, select all the text contained within the cell and replace that with the new string. This issue affects the grid on the following pages:

You can resolve this issue in Project Server 2010 by doing both of the following:
Apply Project Server 2010 Service Pack 1 to your Project Server 2010 deployment. For information about Project Server 2010 Service Pack 1, see Deploy Service Pack 1 for Project Server 2010.
Apply the latest updates for Internet Explorer 9 on your workstations that are using PWA.
Browser Security Settings
Project Web App must be added to your Trusted Sites list. Additionally, PWA requires the following browser security settings permissions:
Active Scripting
Binary and script behaviors Enables Gantt Bars to be drawn and enables the New button functionality in the Project Center.
Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting This feature is used when you edit the Enterprise Global template or calendars to invoke the update within Project Professional, or it is used when you choose to open resources or projects in Project Professional.
Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins This feature is used in conjunction with the “Binary and script behaviors” permission for the New and Open menus in the Project Center, the Open menu in the Resource Center, and in the process of opening the Enterprise Global Template and calendars.
Depending on your settings, you may be prompted to run “DB Query Support” from Microsoft, which is safe for you to allow. DB Query Support is beneficial when you invoke Project Professional and send data to it. IT is also beneficial when you invoke the New menu in the Project Center.
Editing Project owners in Project Web App by using Internet Explorer 9
If you are using Internet Explorer 9 in Project Web App, you cannot edit the Project Owner field on the Project Information page. In Project Server 2010, you can resolve this issue by applying Project Server 2010 Service Pack 1, and also by applying the latest updates for Internet Explorer 9 to your workstations that are using PWA.
The AJAX grid controls
Project Web App users who access Project Server 2010 will now view their pages by using the new AJAX grid controls. These are JavaScript grid controls that supports both read and write operations. They are faster than the previous controls, have cell validation, a rich color palette, and an interactive field chooser. Unlike the ActiveX controls previously used in Microsoft Office Project Server 2007, the AJAX grid does not require local installation and avoids security concerns about downloading unsigned controls.
