Note
Unless otherwise noted, the information in this article applies to both Microsoft Search Server 2008 and Microsoft Search Server 2008 Express.
During the indexing process, content items are accessed and read by the crawler. The process of extracting the information from these files results in a content index that is located in the file system of the index server and a Search database that is located in the database used by Search Server 2008. User search queries are run against this content index and the Search database. The articles in this section describe the default settings that are used by the crawler and what you can do to aid the crawling process and produce better search results for users.
Add content sources (Search Server 2008). Content sources define what content to crawl, how to access the content, and how to behave when crawling that content.
About content sources (Search Server 2008). You can specify settings that define when content is crawled and crawl behavior, such as how deep to crawl within a Web site or how many server hops are allowed.
IFilters and protocol handlers (Search Server 2008). Search Server installs with the ability to read and index a specific set of file types. This initial list of file types can be increased by installing and registering additional IFilters.
