Back up and restore databases by using DPM (Office SharePoint Server)

Applies To: Office SharePoint Server 2007

This Office product will reach end of support on October 10, 2017. To stay supported, you will need to upgrade. For more information, see , Resources to help you upgrade your Office 2007 servers and clients.

Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2007 (DPM) is designed to continuously protect and reliably recover data on Microsoft application and file servers. It enables disk-based and tape-based data protection and recovery for servers in and across Active Directory domains. DPM performs replication, synchronization, and recovery-point creation to provide reliable protection and rapid recovery of data by system administrators and by end-users. Some advantages of using DPM over the SharePoint Products and Technologies built-in tools include the following:

  • Scheduled backup capability within the user interface.

  • Automatic deletion of old backup files.

  • Fully supported recovery of the SharePoint configuration database and Central Administration content database as part of farm recovery.

For more information about how System Center Data Protection Manager compares with other tools for protecting your Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 data, see Choose backup and recovery tools (Office SharePoint Server).

Back up databases by using Data Protection Manager

You can only create DPM protection groups that protect all of a SharePoint Products and Technologies farm. You cannot protect SharePoint databases as a SQL Server data source. You can recover individual databases from a farm backup.

Your protection group can include the SharePoint farm, any external SQL Server databases, and the folders that include farm customizations.

This topic does not provide detailed instructions for backing up SharePoint Products and Technologies with DPM, because it is a multi-step process that includes many procedures. For more information about how to configure DPM to back up SharePoint farms, see Configuring DPM 2007 (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=123464&clcid=0x409).

Note

You cannot individually recover the Central Administration content database or the configuration database for a SharePoint farm. You can use DPM to recover these databases, but only as part of a full-farm recovery.
You must use the procedure that is described in Backing up Office SharePoint Server Search by using System Center Data Protection Manager (white paper) to protect the search database and index.
