Planning for Quality of Service (QoS)
Topic Last Modified: 2011-09-30
Each communication type that you enable for Quality of Service (QoS) must use a nonoverlapping port range for its traffic. Nonoverlapping port ranges are set by default for audio/video when you install Microsoft Lync Server 2010. You can change these ranges if you need to.
The default port ranges for Lync Server 2010 are as shown in the following table. You can actually use any port from 1024 to 65535. As noted earlier, DSCP marking is disabled by default. If you are using QoS for application sharing, you will need to adjust the port ranges so that none of them overlap with the others. These are the default values:
Communication type | Port range |
---|---|
Audio |
49152 to 57500 |
Video |
57501 to 65535 |
Application sharing |
49152 to 65535 |
Audio and video traffic on clients require a minimum of 40 ports, 20 for audio and 20 for video. By default, all communication types on the client use the entire port range from 1024 to 65535, so you will need to change these port ranges in order to enable QoS. Management is easier if the port range on the client is within the port range for the same communication type, but the only requirement is that each server and each client have a nonoverlapping port range.
You can use the following worksheet to ensure that you have all the information that you need to enable QoS.
