How to: Change Table, View and Column Names in a Data Source View using Data Source View Designer
To change the FriendlyName value for a table, in Data Source View Designer, in the Tables or Diagram pane, click the table, and then in the Properties window, edit the FriendlyName property.
In Data Source View Designer, you can choose to display either the data source names or the friendly names of objects. To display friendly names for the objects, right-click the background of the Diagram pane, and then click Show Friendly Names. You can also click Show Friendly Names on the Data Source View menu.
Note
To change the name of a named query or a named calculation, edit the Name property in the Properties window.
Tip
By default, the Diagram pane in Data Source View Designer displays the friendly name for tables, views and columns. To change this default, right-click an open area within the Diagram pane and click Show Friendly Names (or on the Data Source View menu and click Show Friendly Names).
To change the FriendlyName property for a table or view
In Business Intelligence Development Studio, open the project or connect to the database that contains the data source view in which you want to change the FriendlyName property for a table or view.
In Solution Explorer, expand the Data Source Views folder, then open the data source view in Data Source View Designer by doing one of the following:
- Double-click the data source view.
- Right-click the data source view and click Open.
- Click the data source view and then on the View menu, click Open.
Select the table or view that you wish to rename in either the Diagram pane or the Tables pane and then open the Properties window (or right-click the table or view and click Properties.)

To locate a table or view, you can use the Find Table option by either clicking the Data Source View menu or right-clicking in an open area of the Tables or Diagram panes. For more information, see How to: View Objects in a Data Source View Using Data Source View Designer.
- In the Properties window, change FriendlyName property for the table or view.
- Save the modified data source view by doing one of the following:
- On the File menu, click Save Selected Items or Save All.
- On the Data Source View Designer toolbar, click Save Selected Items or Save All.
- Close the Data Source View Designer in Business Intelligence Development Studio and then click Save when prompted.
To change the FriendlyName property for a column
In Business Intelligence Development Studio, open the project or connect to the database that contains the data source view in which you want to change the FriendlyName property for a column.
In Solution Explorer, expand the Data Source Views folder, then open the data source view in Data Source View Designer by doing one of the following:
- Double-click the data source view.
- Right-click the data source view and click Open.
- Click the data source view and then on the View menu, click Open.
Locate the table, named query, or view containing the column that you wish to rename in either the Diagram pane or the Tables pane.
Note
To locate a table or view, you can use the Find Table option by either clicking the Data Source View menu or right-clicking in an open area of the Tables or Diagram panes. For more information, see How to: View Objects in a Data Source View Using Data Source View Designer.
- Select the column that you wish to rename by doing one of the following:
- In the Tables pane, expand the table, view or named query and then select the column that you want to change.
- In the Diagram pane, adjust the Zoom property to enable you to view the columns in the selected table, view or named query and then select the column that you want to change.
- In the Properties window, change FriendlyName property for the selected column.
- Save the modified data source view by doing one of the following:
- On the File menu, click Save Selected Items or Save All.
- On the Data Source View Designer toolbar, click Save Selected Items or Save All.
- Close the Data Source View Designer in Business Intelligence Development Studio and then click Save when prompted.
