How to Modify a Computer or Device Configuration in the Hardware Editor

Use the following Hardware Editor procedures to modify a computer or device configuration. You can modify only computer and device configurations that are not system-defined.

If you use the Hardware Editor to modify a computer or SAN device configuration that is in use by an active capacity model, the hardware configuration change you make is applied to the corresponding item used in the capacity model. A hardware configuration that is used in a capacity model can appear in the following formats:

  • SiteName\ServerName
  • SiteName\ServerName\DiskArrayName
  • SiteName\SANName

You can then view the changes you make in the Model Editor. The benefit of using this method of modifying hardware is that you can easily make changes to in-use hardware using the list view in the Hardware Editor.

Note

If you modify hardware that is in use in an active capacity model, you must run a simulation afterward to view updated Simulation Results.

For a list of other tasks you can perform by using the Capacity Planner Hardware Editor, see Hardware Editor Tasks.

To modify a computer configuration in the Hardware Editor

  1. Navigate to the Computer configurations page.

  2. Click the computer configuration that you want to modify.

  3. In the view list, click CPU and then click the CPU device configuration that you want to modify in the computer configuration, remove the CPU device, and then add the CPU configuration of your choice.

  4. In the view list, click Disk, click the disk device configuration that you want to modify in the computer configuration, remove the single disk, and then add the single disk configuration of your choice.

  5. Repeat step 4 for any additional disks that you want to modify.

  6. If you need to modify a disk array, in the view list, click Disk Array, click the disk array configuration that you want to modify in the computer configuration, remove the disk array, and then add the disk array configuration of your choice.

  7. On the File menu, click Save hardware library.

To modify a CPU hardware device in the Hardware Editor

  1. Navigate to the Device configurations page.

  2. In the view list, click CPU.

  3. In the CPU list, click the name of the CPU device configuration that you want to modify.

  4. In the Properties of device DeviceName action dialog, modify any properties as needed.

To modify a disk hardware device in the Hardware Editor

  1. Navigate to the Device configurations page.

  2. In the view list, click Disk.

  3. In the Disk list, click the name of the disk device configuration that you want to modify.

  4. In the Properties of device DeviceName action dialog, modify any properties as needed.

To modify a RAID or SAN hardware device in the Hardware Editor

  1. Navigate to the Device configurations page.

  2. In the view list, click Disk Array.

  3. In the Properties of device <DeviceName> action dialog, click the disk configuration that you want to modify and then add or remove disks from the array.

  4. If you need to modify the number of disks for the disk group in the disk group being modified, click the value in Disk Count and then type the number of disks in the array.
