Adding Disks to the DPM Server

Published : September 27, 2005

When you add a disk to the storage pool, DPM reformats the disk, which erases any data that the disk contains. If the new disk is basic, DPM converts the disk to a dynamic disk. In some cases the conversion to a dynamic disk might fail, especially when large volumes already exist on the basic disk. If this occurs, use Windows Disk Management to delete any existing volumes on the basic disk and then add the disk to the DPM Storage Pool.

If the name of a disk is listed as “Unknown” on the Disks tab in the Management task area of DPM Administrator Console, you cannot add the disk to the storage pool until the disk name is corrected. To resolve this issue, perform the following procedure.

To correct a disk name

  1. In Device Manager, expand Disk drives.

  2. Right-click each disk listed as "Disk drive" and select Uninstall.

All disks without a friendly name are listed as “Disk Drive.” “HITACHI_DK23EB-40” is an example of a friendly name.

  3. On the Action menu, click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the disk.
