Getting Started

To get started using the Server Virtualization Management Pack, complete the following installations and configurations:

  • Deploy Operations Manager 2007 and set up your reporting server if you have not done so already.

  • Deploy the Server Virtualization Management Pack, and deploy and configure Operations Manager agents on the VMM server, hosts, and library servers.

  • Optionally enable reporting in Virtual Machine Manager.

Deploy Operations Manager 2007

If you have not already set up a Management Server and configured reporting in Operations Manager 2007, do so before you deploy the Server Virtualization Management Pack:

Deploy the Server Virtualization Management Pack

Deploying the Management Pack involves the following tasks:

  1. Import prerequisite Management Packs.

  2. Import the Server Virtualization Management Pack.

  3. Deploy Operations Manager 2007 agents on the VMM server, virtual machine hosts, and library servers.

  4. Enable proxying by the Operations Manager agent on the VMM server.

Import Prerequisite Management Packs

Before you can import the Server Virtualization Management Pack into Operations Manager, you must import the following Management Packs, which provide data for the Server Virtualization Management Pack:

  • Windows Server Library Management Pack (Microsoft.Windows.Server.Library.mp)

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Discovery Management Pack (Microsoft.SQLServer.2005.Discovery.mp)

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Monitoring Management Pack (Microsoft.SQLServer.2005.Monitoring.mp)

  • Microsoft SQL Server Library Management Pack (Microsoft.SQLServer.Library.mp)

  • Windows Internet Information Services (IIS) 2003 Management Pack (Microsoft.Windows.InternetInformationServices.2003.mp)

  • Windows IIS Common Library Management Pack (Microsoft.Windows.InternetInformationServices.CommonLibrary.mp)

  • Windows Server 2003 Management Pack (Microsoft.Windows.Server.2003.mp)

These Management Packs are available for download from the Management Pack Catalog in the Operations Manager 2007 TechCenter (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=98812).

Import the Server Virtualization Management Pack

After you download the Server Virtualization Management Pack files, you can use the following procedure to import the Management Pack into the Operations Manager 2007 server.

To import the Server Virtualization Management Pack

  1. Log on to the server under an account that has the Operations Manager Administrators role for the Operations Manager 2007 Management Group.

  2. Download the Server Virtualization Management Pack from the Management Pack Catalog in the System Center Operations Manager 2007 TechCenter (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=98812).

By default, the installation package for the Server Virtualization Management Pack downloads the following files to the System Center Management Packs folder in the Operations Manager 2007 installation directory:

    • Virtual Machine Manager 2007 Management Pack (Microsoft.SystemCenter.VirtualMachineManager.2007.mp)

    • Virtualization Library Management Pack (Microsoft.Virtualization.Library.mp)

    • Virtualization Reports Management Pack (Microsoft.Virtualization.Reports.mp)

    • Virtual Server 2005 R2 Management Pack (Microsoft.Virtualization.VirtualServer.2005R2.mp)

  3. In the Operations Console, click the Administration button.

    Note

When you run the Operations Console on a computer that is not a Management Server, the Connect To Server dialog box is displayed. In the Server name text box, type the name of the Operations Manager 2007 Management Server that you want the Operations Console to connect to.

  4. Right-click Management Packs, and then click Import Management Pack(s).

  5. In the Select Management Packs to Import dialog box, browse to the Server Virtualization Management Pack, select the Server Virtualization Management Pack files you downloaded in step 1, and then click Open.

    Note

You must import the Server Virtualization Management Pack files in the following order:

    1 Microsoft.Virtualization.Library.mp

    2 Microsoft.SystemCenter.VirtualMachine Manager.2007.mp

    3 Microsoft.Virtualization.VirtualServer.2005R2.mp

    4 Microsoft.Virtualization.Reports.mp file

  6. Click Import.

  7. After the import process completes and the dialog box displays an icon next to each Management Pack indicating success or failure of the importation, click Close.

The Management Packs pane of the Operations Console lists all imported Management Packs.

Deploy Operations Manager 2007 Agents

To provide comprehensive health and performance monitoring and Management Pack reports, it is a best practice to deploy an Operations Manager agent on each computer on which a Virtual Machine Manager component is installed. This includes the Virtual Machine Manager server, virtual machine hosts, library servers, database servers, and the Web server hosting the VMM Self-Service portal.

For information about how to configure the Agent Action account for the Operations Manager agents you deploy, with sufficient permissions to enable the functionality of the Server Virtualization Management Pack, see Security Considerations for the Server Virtualization Management Pack.

For instructions about how to deploy Operations Manager agents, see "How to Deploy the Operations Manager 2007 Agent for Agent-Management of Computers" (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=98813).

Enable Proxying by the Operations Manager Agent on the VMM Server

After deploying an Operations Manager agent on the VMM server, you must enable the agent to act as a proxy.

To enable the OpsMgr agent on the VMM server to act as a proxy

  1. Log on to the computer with an account that has the Operations Manager Administrators role for the Operations Manager 2007 Management Group.

  2. In the Operations Console, click the Administration button.

  3. In the navigation pane, expand the Device Management node, and then select the Agent Managed node.

  4. In the list of computers displayed in the Agent Managed results pane, right-click the computer that is the Virtual Machine Manager server, and then click Properties.

  5. On the Security tab, select the Allow this agent to act as a proxy and discover managed objects on other computers check box.

    Note

The account under which the Operations Manager agent on the VMM server runs must have access to the SQL Server database that Virtual Machine Manager uses.

Optionally Enable Reporting in Virtual Machine Manager

After deploying the Server Virtualization Management Pack, you can optionally enable reporting in Virtual Machine Manager. In Virtual Machine Manager, reporting is performed through Operations Manager 2007. The following procedures tell how to grant VMM administrators access to the Virtual Machine Manager reports and enable reporting in Virtual Machine Manager.

Add VMM Administrators to the Report Operator User Role

To give VMM administrators access to reports, you must add them to the Report Operator user role in Operations Manager 2007. Until you do this, the administrators cannot view and order reports in the VMM Administrator Console.

As Report Operators, the administrators also can order, schedule, and design reports in the Operations Console on the Operations Manager server.

If the administrators add their own reports to the folder that stores the Virtual Machine Manager reports, the reports are also available in Reporting view in Virtual Machine Manager.

For information about assigning the Report Operator role, see "How to Add Users or Groups to the Report Operator User Role in Operations Manager 2007" (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=98816).

Identify the Reporting Server in Virtual Machine Manager

To enable reporting in Virtual Machine Manager and add Reporting view to the VMM Administrator Console, you must identify the Operations Manager reporting server in Virtual Machine Manager. For more information, see "How to Enable Reporting in Virtual Machine Manager" (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=98815).
