Introduction to Configuration Manager P2V Migration Toolkit
Updated: January 1, 2012
Applies To: System Center 2012 Configuration Manager, System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SP1
The Configuration Manager P2V Migration Toolkit for Service Manager 2012 helps a central site administrator to complete the migration of a branch office site server to Microsoft System Center 2012 Configuration Manager. It provides the software that the central site administrator uses to create the migration media. After creating the migration media, the central site administrator provides it to the local administrator of the branch office. The local administrator then runs the media and uses the migration wizards to make appropriate selections for the branch office environment. The migration media kicks off a process that virtualizes the Configuration Manager 2007 site server instance and lays the groundwork for the next steps in the migration. The process preserves your current Configuration Manager settings and data through the migration.

Administrator Roles and Tasks for Migration
In a branch office migration scenario where you plan to use Configuration Manager P2V Migration Toolkit, responsibilities are divided between the central site administrator and the branch office administrator. The individual responsibilities are shown in the following table.
Administrator |
Responsibilities |
---|---|
Central site administrator |
Creates migration media. Provides media to the branch office administrator. |
Branch office administrator |
Receives migration media from the central site administrator. Completes the local, hands-on process to prepare a single server for a side-by-side migration using Configuration Manager P2V Migration Toolkit. |
Branch office administrator |
Installs System Center 2012 Configuration Manager on the physical server. Completes the side-by-side migration. |
Important
For detailed information about migration, including instructions for a side-by-side migration, see Migrating from Configuration Manager 2007 to System Center 2012 Configuration Manager.
Migrating by Rehosting
The Rehost path addresses the following scenario: the organization is migrating to System Center 2012 Configuration Manager. The branch office server meets the hardware and other requirements for Windows Server 2008 R2, the Hyper-V role, and System Center 2012 Configuration Manager. Therefore, the P2V migration media is able to automate rehosting the Configuration Manager 2007 site server in a virtual machine (VM) that is hosted on the same physical computer. For more information about the hardware and software requirements for using Configuration Manager P2V Migration Toolkit to prepare your server for a side-by-side migration, see Prerequisites for Configuration Manager P2V Migration Toolkit.
Migrating by Image Capture
The Image Capture-only path is a good solution for a scenario in which the branch office is decommissioning and replacing a server. Before decommissioning the server, you can use Configuration Manager P2V Migration Toolkit to image the Configuration Manager 2007 site server and convert it into a virtual hard disk (VHD) that can be stored in a safe place until you provision the new server.
