Operating System Requirements

Updates Publisher 2011 is supported on the following operating systems:

  • The Windows Vista operating system

  • The 64-bit editions of the Windows Vista operating system

  • The 64-bit editions of the Windows 7 operating system

  • The 32-bit editions of the Windows 7 operating system

  • The 64-bit editions of the Windows 8 operating system1

  • The 32-bit editions of the Windows 8 operating system1

  • The Windows Server 2008 operating system

  • The Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system

  • The Windows Server 2012 operating system1

Publishing Updates to WSUS on Windows Server 2012

Updates Publisher 2011 supports publishing to Windows Server 2012, but in some scenarios, additional requirements are necessary. You must install Updates Publisher 2011 on a computer that supports WSUS 4.0 to publish updates to WSUS on a Windows Server 2012 computer. When you install Updates Publisher 2011 on a computer with the WSUS 3.0 Administrative console, and then publish to WSUS on a Windows Server 2012 computer, the result is a WSUS version mismatch error in SCUP.log. The following table provides a list of the operating systems supported by Updates Publisher 2011 and the requirements to publish to WSUS on Windows Server 2012.

To publish updates from Updates Publisher 2011 to WSUS on a computer running Windows Server 2012, the user must be a member of the Local Administrator group on the computer and you must configure specific permissions on the computer. This behavior is different from other supported operating systems that require the user to only be a member of the WSUS Administrator group on the computer to publish updates. Use the following procedure to allow local administrators to publish updates from Updates Publisher 2011 to WSUS on the computer running Windows Server 2012:

Important

Complete this procedure on the update server computer running Windows Server 2012. Updates Publisher 2011 will publish updates to WSUS on the update server computer.

To allow local administrators to publish updates from Updates Publisher to Windows Server 2012

  1. Open Registry Editor on the update server computer.

    Warning

    If you use the Registry Editor incorrectly, you might cause serious problems that might require you to reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using the Registry Editor incorrectly. Use the Registry Editor at your own risk.

  2. Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AppID\{8F5D3447-9CCE-455C-BAEF-55D42420143B}.

  3. Click Edit, click Permissions, and then click Advanced.

  4. Click Change owner to, specify Administrators, and then click OK.

  5. Specify Full Control permissions for Administrators and SYSTEM. Close Registry Editor.

  6. Open a command prompt with Administrator privileges on the update server computer, and then type Dcomcnfg.exe.

  7. Expand Component Services, expand Computer, expand My Computer, expand DCOM Config, right-click WsusCertServer, and click Properties.

  8. Select the Security tab, and configure the following permissions:

    • Launch and Activation: Select Allow for the Local Launch and Local Activation permissions.

    • Access Permission: Select Allow for the Local Access permission.

  9. Restart the WsusCertServer process. One way to restart the WsusCertServer process is to type net stop wsuscertserver and press ENTER, and then type net start wsuscertserver and press ENTER from a command prompt that you open with Administrator privileges.

Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 8

Note

Applies to the Windows 8 operating system.

You must install the Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 8 to publish updates to WSUS on Windows Server 2012. The WSUS 4.0 WSUS Administrative console files are installed, which allows Updates Publisher 2011 to communicate with WSUS on the computer running Windows Server 2012.

Install the Remote Server Administration Tools for Windows 8 from the Microsoft Download Center.

WSUS 4.0

Note

Applies to the Windows Server 2012 operating system.

When you install Updates Publisher 2011 on a computer running Windows Server 2012, you must install the WSUS server role before you can publish updates to WSUS on another computer running Windows Server 2012. When you install Updates Publisher 2011 on the same computer as the update server, the WSUS server role will already be installed.

WSUS 3.0 SP2

WSUS 3.0 SP2 hotfix

Note

Applies to the following operating systems:

  • Windows Vista

  • Windows 7

  • Windows Server 2008

  • Windows Server 2008 R2

The required WSUS 3.0 SP2 installation is different when you install Updates Publisher 2011 on the same computer as the update server or on a different computer.

  • If Updates Publisher 2011 and the update server are installed on the same computer, the full version of WSUS must be installed on the computer.

  • If Updates Publisher 2011 and the update server are installed on separate computers, the WSUS Administrative console must be installed on the Updates Publisher 2011 computer.

Updates Publisher 2011 Workspaces

Updates Publisher 2011 provides four workspaces that you can use to publish software updates.

  • Catalog workspace: In this workspace, you can add software updates catalog subscriptions and then import the software updates from the catalogs into the Updates Publisher 2011 repository. You can also edit or remove a subscription from the workspace. For more information, see Managing Software Updates Catalogs.

  • Update workspace: In this workspace, you can create and edit software updates and software update bundles, assign a software update or bundle to a publication, publish a software update and bundle, export a software update or bundle to another Updates Publisher 2011 repository, and more. For more information, see Managing Software Updates.

  • Publications workspace: In this workspace, you can publish or export software updates and bundles that have been assigned to a publication (software updates are assigned to a publication in the Updates workspace). You can also remove a software update or bundle from a publication, rename a publication, and delete a publication. For more information, see Managing Publications.

  • Rules workspace: In this workspace, you can create, edit, and delete applicability rules that can be applied when a software update is deployed. Software updates and bundles can have two types of applicability rules: installable rules and installed rules. Installable rules are used to determine whether the software update must be installed. Installed rules are used to verify whether the software update is already installed on the computer. For more information, see Managing Applicability Rules.

Supported Languages for the Binary File, Title, and Descriptions

Note

Updates Publisher 2011 is available only in English.

Updates Publisher 2011 supports multiple languages in the following ways:

  • When publishing software updates, you can specify the language of the software update binary file. You can also specify that the binary is language neutral. The following languages are supported:

    • Arabic

    • Chinese (Hong Kong S.A.R.)

    • Chinese (Traditional)

    • Chinese (Simplified)

    • Czech

    • Danish

    • Dutch

    • English

    • Finnish

    • French

    • German

    • Greek

    • Hebrew

    • Hungarian

    • Italian

    • Japanese

    • Korean

    • Norwegian

    • Polish

    • Portuguese

    • Portuguese (Brazil)

    • Russian

    • Spanish

    • Swedish

    • Turkish

  • When creating or editing a software update, you can specify titles and descriptions for several languages. This is helpful when exporting and when publishing software updates.

    When exporting or publishing software updates, Updates Publisher 2011 displays the title and description of the software update based on locale of the computer. For example, imagine that you create a software update that has an English and Spanish title. If you create the software update on a computer whose locale is English, by default, you would see the title and description in English. If you then exported or published the software update to a computer whose locale is Spanish, by default, you would see the title and description in Spanish.

    Updates Publisher 2011 supports the following languages for the software update titles and descriptions.
